Moving On
There was no other option left. She had to leave. Sometime between high school and graduate school, Kagome realized that she was in love with her best friend. They used to sleep over at each other's houses and she would lie next to him and brush her fingers through his hair. He would open his eyes when her fingers got tangled in his hair and look at her through his golden gaze. She talked constantly, but she always knew he was listening, and she knew he cared. Ever since he moved in next door to her 7 years ago, they had become friends. She wanted them to become more, but she knew he did not care for her like she did for him. Later in his teenage years he would become popular, and he would begin to bring around his girlfriends. When she saw them together, her heart broke a little more inside while she had a pleasant smile pasted on the outside. However, yesterday was different. This time he brought his girlfriend home to meet his parents: a momentous occasion in his playboy life. Kagome still remembers the way they held each others' hands and laughed at their little jokes when he brought his girlfriend over so they could meet. He wanted his best friend's approval. And even though she loved him, she knew that girl made him happy. When he called later that evening to ask Kagome her opinion, she lied and said she thought they were perfect.
She couldn't think about it anymore. It only made her feel hollow. By the way they had stared into each other's eyes, she knew she had lost him.
Now, she was moving on.

Kagome walks outside in order to get a breath of fresh air in a house that reminds her of him. As she steps out of the doorway, she sees silver out of the corner of her eye. Quickly, she turns and catches an amber gaze. Frozen, she doesn't move. He begins to stride toward her and when he gets within three feet, he stops. He slowly lifts his hand and reaches out toward her, as if reaching for a star in the sky. It seems like forever before she finally stops staring, raises her hand, and places it in his.
