Kagome Higurashi smiled at Sango. They had been secluded together since dawn and were to remain unseen until dark. Her friend looked amazing. They had spent their seclusion in the hot springs behind the shrine. They had washed and done their hair, now they were about to be fitted by a seamstress for their kimonos.
"Kagome you are such a beautiful bride. I don't think that I've ever seen you so happy."
"I don't think that i have ever felt so happy." Kagome returned, she grabbed her hairbrush off of the table and began to stroke her hair, working out the tangles and knots. "I'm just glad that soon, I'll finally be married to Inuyasha."
"You really love him don't you?" Sango's brown eyes looked thoughtfully at Kagome. She had been through so much in such a short time and had never complained. The opposite actually, she had helped everyone that she could with her knowledge of the future.
"I do." Kagome sighed deeply. A faint feeling of dread beat in her breast. She shook her head. It had to just be cold feet. Her mother had always said that everyone woman experienced cold feet before her wedding. It was natural.
Sango just grinned at her friend. "At least you are not going to marry a lecher."
Kagome burst out laughing. "No. No, I'm not. Though you have to admit, Miroku has improved since your engagement became official."
"Improved?" snorted Sango "The only thing he had improved on is his feeling up everyone woman who comes into his reach."
"Okay, okay. I get it. At least he's stopped asking the women to bear his children." Kagome pointed out.
Sango had to agree with her friend. He had stopped asking every woman he met to bear his children. He only asked her now. But his damn wandering hand was getting on her nerves. If he had only kept it to wander on her she might be okay with it. But no, he had to use it on girl that came his way.
"We should probably go and find that seamstress."
Kagome grabbed her friend's hand and dragged her out of the room and over to the shrine. Kaede had told her that was where the fittings were going to be held. She was so excited. It less than ten hours she was going to finally be married to Inuyasha. The faint feeling of dread returned. Her heart pounded painfully in her chest. Kagome just shook the feeling off and smiled at the young woman who was waiting for her.
--------------
"Are ye ready?" came Kaede's crackling voice from the door of the shrine.
Kagome smiled at her. Kaede reminded her of her grandfather sometimes. She was such a comforting presence. Always ready to help give her advice. The only thing missing was her grandfather's sense of humour and kooky merchandise.
"As ready as I'll ever be."
Kaede came forward and gave Kagome a brief hug. "Ye look radiant, child. Now come. He is waiting for you."
Kagome nodded her head. Her kimono was blood red with golden embroidery all over. Her dark hair had been piled up on the top of her head in a tight mass of curls. A sakura blossom was pinned into her hair as well. Kaede help the door open for her as she walked out of the Shrine.
Both she and Inuyasha had asked that their marriage take place at the Sacred Tree where they had first met. And now Kagome made the small trek there, following Kaede. Sango met up with them before they reached the small clearing. Kaede left them to take her place at the front of the assembly. Sango gave Kagome's hand one last squeeze and smile. Before she walked with her friend through their friends and the villagers. Kagome saw Inuyasha for the first time since early the day before and felt her heart melt.
He was so handsome. His long silver hair shined in the rays of sun that pierced through the trees. His citrine eyes were warm and comforting. Any misgivings she might have had were immediately gone. So lost in his eyes and her love for him she was. His red fire rat kimono matching her own. The tetseiga sheathed at his side.
She reached him smiling a private smile only for him. Their hands reached for each other of their own accord. His thumb rubbed the side of her hand in a soothing motion as the ceremony began. They kept stealing lover's glances at the other through the corner of their eyes. When Kaede annouced them man and wife, Kagome turned and looked at her mate. Inuyasha mouth "I love you" just as his mouth descended on hers. His kiss sealed their union and made Kagome go weak limbed.
As he pulled away Kagome's eyes were glazed over with her love and passion for him. His grinned down at his little miko, then turned them both to look at the others. A proud and triumphant grin on his face as he presented his mate to them all. A loud cheer went up. Kagome felt her face flush and eased herself into Inuyasha's body. His arm came up around her and held her close to him.
------------
The whole village had been transformed for the marriage of Kagome and Inuyasha. They all turned out stupendous dishes and well wishes for the pair. Dancing and singing began as food was dispensed to one and all. Kagome sat with her husband on a blanket on the ground. They greeted their friends and held each other tenderly.
Inuyasha leaned down and kissed Kagome again for what seemed like the millionth time, not that she minded. It was almost as though he was afraid that she might disappear if he let her go. Then he slapped the side of his neck, breaking the spell. A flattened Myoga drifted into Inuyasha's opened palm.
"My lord." greeted Myoga with a slight bow for a flea. "Such tasty blood." He began to shift from foot to foot. A telltale sign that there was something that he wanted to say to them but was clearly afraid of the reaction that he would get.
"What do you want Myoga?" asked Inuyasha impatiently. He hated that his time with Kagome was being interrupted.
"My lord, well there is something that I wish to tell you." he hedged nervously.
"Spit it out, would ya?"
"Very well. I have been hearing rumours lately about your brother." He said. "From what I have heard, the young human who travels with him was killed while under his protection."
Kagome gasped in horror. Not Rin. The little girl with the shy smile and happy face. The little girl who trusted Sesshomaru more than anything else in the world.
"Apparently, what little humanity the girl had stirred in him was extinguished. He has now begun to reestablish all the feuds he gave up when she came under his protection. Including the one against you, my lord.
"Damn it." cursed Inuyasha. He had thought that he and Sesshomaru had at least come to an understanding of hating each other but not killing the other no matter how much they got pissed off.
"I hate to be bearing such bad news at a time such as this. However it it only a matter of time before he comes to find you. Of that I am sure." warned Myoga.
"Sesshomaru won't do anything." said Kagome. She was sure of that. After all Rin had managed to reach something in him. There was no way that all that had been taken away with the girl.
Inuyasha said nothing. Kagome looked at him. His eyes had lost some of their warmth. That feeling of dread she had had was back now, pounding harder and harder in her chest.
A scream pierced through the happy noises of the party around them. A young woman began to run through the crowd of people. She was screaming something incoherently. Inuyasha winced at the decible, it hurt his sensitive ears. She managed to get one word out before passing out cold. "Demon."
Then others began to scream. A flash of green light appeared at the edge of the huts of the villagers. The men and woman began to run, grabbing children and fleeing into the dense forest surrounding the village. Inuyasha jumped to his feet pulling Kagome up with him. This was bad. Sesshomaru walked slowly into the village, his whip swinging and striking random villagers. Ice cold rage flared in his eyes, in an otherwise impassive face.
"Sesshomaru." said Inuyasha looking at his brother. He quickly turned to Kagome. "Kagome, you have to go."
"No."
"Kagome, you don't have your bow and I can't risk losing you."
Her heart beat harder and a great weight constricted in her chest. Tears began to form in her eyes. "Inuyasha, I can't." she managed. "I can't . . . ."
Inuyasha bent down and captured her lips. "I love you. Please, Kagome, go."
"No!"
Inuyasha saw Miroku fighting his way over, Sango hot on his tail. Catching Miroku's attention, Inuyasha nodded down to Kagome. Miroku nodded. He shouted something to Sango and they fought harder to get closer to the pair. Kagome was holding onto Inuyasha, afraid that she might never see her mate again should she leave. Sesshomaru walked slowly but surely to them, cutting down everyone that came into his path.
Miroku and Sango reached them. Inuyasha pulled back from his wife, then shoved her into Miroku and Sango's open arms. "Keep her safe." he told them.
"No!" screamed Kagome. She dearly wished that she could have yelled out sit on him but she had removed his beads after Naraku had finally been defeated. Miroku and Sango held on to her and dragged her back away from Inuyasha. Tears spilled down Kagome's cheeks. She struggled against her friends and tried to get free. Nothing worked they held firmly and refused to let go. She cried and screamed. Inuyasha was looking right at her, he mouthed "I love you" one last time to her, before turning around to face his brother.
---------------
Miroku and Sango refused to let go of Kagome until they were well away from the fight. They knew that Inuyasha had not wanted to make Kagome leave but understood his reasons which was why they had done as their friend had asked. Kagome was still crying.
Sango looked down at her friend with great sorrow. Kagome really loved him. It was painful to see her grief. As soon as Sango and Miroku let up their hold on Kagome, she ripped free and ran as quickly as she could to get back to her mate. Sango and Miroku followed. Neither spoke. They all reached the village at the same time.
Flames shot up from the huts and light flashed all over. Roars echoed and battle cries rent the air. Kagome stopped dead. Time moved in slow motion. Inuyasha had the tetseiga crossed with Sesshomaru's tokijin. They pushed in then were pushed back by the force of their swords auras repelling the other. Inuyasha and Sesshomaru charged at each other again. Sesshomaru feinted and swung the tokijin low. The blade slid through Inuyasha's body smoothly. Sesshomaru twisted the blade and pulled up till the blade had pierced Inuyasha's heart. Blood poured out of the wound to pool on the ground. A look of disbelief frozen on Inuyasha's face. Sesshomaru whispered something to his brother as he extracted his sword from Inuyasha's body. Without another word or a single glance back Sesshomaru walked away from his brother's fallen body.
The scream that had caught in Kagome's throat began to choke her. She couldn't breathe. She ran to her mate. Her lay on the ground, blood flowing steadily out of his body, blackening the dirt beneath him. Kagome pulled him onto her lap. His blood soaked into her wedding dress. She looked down into his yellow eyes and saw the pain there. He began to choke on the blood that was filling his lungs.
"Inuyasha." she cried, her tears falling down her face and landing on him. "Inuyasha, don't leave me. Please don't leave me. I love you. I love you so much." she said in a broken whisper.
With much effort, Inuyasha raised a hand and brushed a lock of black hair that had fallen into her face out of the way. He couldn't talk, but he couldn't stand to see the pain on her face. She grabbed on to his hand and held it to her cheek. He tried to smile at her and reassure her that everything was going to be okay.
Pain beat inside of him. But that was quickly seeping out and being replaced with a numb feeling. His wound didn't even hurt anymore. The only thing that hurt was that Kagome was hurting. She kept whispering to him, he just couldn't understand her anymore. He was so tired. His last sight before he closed his eyes and gave in to the dark that had begun to edge in on his vision had been her vivid blue eyes full of tears and anguish.
"NO!" She screamed "NO! NO! NO! IIINNNUUUYYYAAASSSHHHAAA!!!"
Kagome shook her mate's body but could get no response. His hand had fallen limp in her hand. His breathing had stopped. He was gone. He was gone and she could do nothing. Pain and heartache she had never thought she could feel took over. She screamed, loudly and painfully.
As she screamed her pain, power welled up inside of her. Strong, dormant spiritual powers that she had not known she had possessed. They glowed a pink aura around her. Pulsing out in waves. The colour flicked pink then black, growing bigger and bigger.
Kagome stood up from Inuyasha's body. A dazed, tormented look in her blue eyes. She walked like a ghost, in a blood drenched dress away from everything. She didn't even look at Miroku and Sango. She just walked away. The dreadful black aura surrounding her burning anything that came in reach.
