I wrote the last review before reading the second chapter. It was while reading the second chapter that I realized that this is the same author that wrote about pack polyamory. I appreciate your lemons. They break the vanilla mold while maintaining a sense of integrity. So many writers make multiamory something depraved or immoral.
First, I like this. I, however, am an editor, so little things bother me. The things I mention do not detract from your story.
Foremost, there isn't a disclaimer on here. Usually, I think disclaimers are a little redundant on here b/c we all know who the inuyasha characters are. But in this case, you clearly borrowed form Golden's Memoirs of a Geisha, down to the character Mameha. That needs to be acknowledged.
Second, you've got a clash in timelines here that is significant. The Inuyasha story takes place in Feudal Japan (1100-1600, but in the case of the show, 1450), which is important because it was before the establishment of major metropolises, and folk tales and superstitions were more prevalent in everyday life. The Memoirs story takes place during the Sh?wa period. This is solidly during the modern era after Japan opened their borders. This is important because
1. folktales (such as y?kai) start to take a back seat to visual culture
2. concepts of sexuality change once Japan becomes more Westernized.
Homosexuality was very commonplace prior to the modern era. There are odes of Classical Japanese literature dating back to 800 AD that glorified the beauty of the male homosexual youth. In fact, the first geishas were males (taikomochi) who frequently cross-dressed, with the field becoming more female-dominant by the 1800s. By the Sh?wa period, the Japanese have learned to hide same-sex culture from Westerners, but it was still there.
Now, in your fictional world, you can have whatever rules you want. But the female/female "looked down upon" comment just doesn't jive well. In actuality, regardless of the time period, it wasn't looked down upon. During times of war (which Memoirs clearly was), it was considered more honorable for a female to sleep with another female than to sleep with a man. Again, during this time period, the focus is on discretion. It's a minor detail that -- for me -- ruins the atmosphere because it'a such a clearly Western perspective.
Hot damn
