Here I am, busy tearing through your stories (over the last two days I think I've read over half)  And I thought you might want to know something interesting.  Coal was given to bad boys and girls because it was the "useful" gift. Coal was expensive but heats much better than anything else.  So it was a necessity, but not considered so much a "gift"  Much like getting socks for Christmas.  As this isn't commonly known, I really like your explanation as well. :)
