The Life Complex by watermarkit

Prologue

No.

Why was this happening?

She struggled to remain conscious. There was blood. Too much blood.

The screams of the people were nothing compared to the sound of the crunching of the bones in her arm. She drew a bloody breath as the reptilian youkai shifted its weight. It had distinctive bright yellow patches against its dark, slimy skin. It's hind claws were embedded deep in her abdomen. It's eyes were pitch black and glazed over with blood thirst. It's breath smoked with distinctive purple miasma.

"Tamaaa..." The creature roared.

"I don't have it!" she yelled, furious.

She used the last of her reiki to purify it. The broken arrow she stabbed in it's throat drained what life it had left. It collapsed onto her as another one approached.

"Get away from her!" a rough male voice yelled. It was enough to distract the lizard. Inuyasha jumped away, leading it on.

Her own heart beat was making her deaf. Pain didn't matter anymore.

"Kagome!" a frantic voice called, "Kagome, stay with me. Kami." Sango collapsed beside her.

She heard more scrambling beside her. "We have to get her out of here." Miroku's voice said, "Inuyasha will hold them off."

Her body was trapped under the carcass of the lizard, it's hind claw still stuck in her body. Sango sliced the appendage off and moved the rest of the corpse away. Kagome was lifted and dragged behind a nearby building. The wall seemed to separate them from the loud chaos outside.

"Oh Kami," Sango repeated, looking at Kagome's wounds. The youkai's claws were still twitching. Sango quickly grabbed them and pulled it out. Poison was seeping from the tips of the appendages.

Kagome gasped. Words wouldn't form. Her lungs were failing her. She closed her eyes.

"Keep her awake!" exclaimed Miroku.

"Kagome!" Sango said. "You'll be alright, just look at me." She started applying pressure to Kagome's abdomen.

Kagome opened her eyes and tried to focus on her friend. Her vision was blurring too.

"San-" Kagome got out.

"It's okay, I'm here." Sango said with a shaky voice. "Just stay awake. We'll get through this."

Miroku grabbed a nearby sword to stab at a giant lizard passing by the door, and dashed outside. "I'm going to find Shippo!" he yelled back at them.

That was the last thing she remembered.
