Chapter 9: Witch

Is something the matter? If you’re concerned about Rin-chan, you should just go to her.” Kagome hummed softly as she mussed up the back of her hair. Instead of brushing out the thick, sable strands, she left the curls alone to hang naturally down her back.

The woman moved about in the silence of her hut, patting down the front of her black dress whenever the material rode a little too high on her thighs. “Honestly, Sesshoumaru-sama…” she continued, almost ignoring his presence altogether. “The kids won’t mind if you check up on them. They’re more excited about the treats they’re gonna get than a worried daiyoukai hovering over their shoulders.”

Sesshoumaru’s eyebrow twitched. “…What have you done to yourself, miko?” he intoned finally, stopping her in her tracks.

Excuse me?”

What kind of foul beast are you portraying?” he tried again, frowning at her current appearance. It was unsettling, to say the least. Her nails were yellowed and cracked, and her fair skin had been covered with green paint and warts of various shapes and sizes. And atop her head was a pointed hat with the body of a cat draped around its rim.

I’m a witch!” Kagome declared with a grin, reaching around him to grab her broomstick from the corner of the room. “We can fly!”

Sesshoumaru huffed at her words. “You are a miko. No sorceress appears as you do.”

Are you a witch expert?” she asked. When he gave her a mild glare, she nodded self-assuredly to herself. “Then your argument is invalid. It’s like saying people only have black hair. I don’t understand why my costume bugs you so much.”

Everything about you bothers this one.”

Well, gee, thanks for telling a girl how you really feel. Kudos to you for being so painfully blunt, Sesshoumaru-sama,” she muttered dryly.

Take it off.”

I beg your–”

Everything. Now,” he told her, gliding forward and into her personal space. His sun-kissed eyes were absolutely scorching as he trapped her within his gaze. “Be only yourself with me. Not this false creature.”

Kagome blushed at his sudden nearness and uncharacteristic proclamations. She couldn’t breathe. “But–”

He leaned closer and gently cupped the back of her neck. “Be only Kagome,” he rumbled deeply, before pulling away and exiting the hut in a flurry of white silks.

In the moments that followed, the female’s frantic pulse began to ebb away as she held a hand over her chest. “…But what should I do now? I’ve already painted myself green…”
