Disclaimer: Though it saddens me to say it, I don’t own anything relating to Takahashi-sensei’s Inuyasha. However, the plot and/or ideas of this drabble series do belong to me, and a nod of recognition goes to the creator of this challenge.
Chapter 4: Hungry Ghost
“Why leave out food for those who cannot eat?”
Kagome flinched, caught off guard by the sudden question. Sapphire eyes twitched almost comically as she answered, “It’s to pay respects to the dead, for the most part. If there aren’t any offerings, the ghosts with malicious intent will eat the corpses of the recently deceased.”
Sesshoumaru wrinkled his nose in distaste as he folded his arms within his sleeves. “Pathetic creatures.”
“Hm…” The woman finished arranging the food on a few small plates. There were several cups of hot water and tea set off to the side. “Can’t argue with that,” she agreed finally. “They were greedy in life and remain so in death. An insatiable hunger like that can’t be cured.”
The male regarded her bowed head with a cool gaze. He watched as she offered a prayer to the spirits, hands clasped together in front of her chest. Unbeknownst to her, her silent guardian vowed to never allow her pure soul to be consumed.
Rin…would be inconsolable if anything happened to the miko.
None will touch her.
