Improbable Cause

The following is Kagome Higurashi’s and Sesshomaru Taisho’s story.

Let the games begin!

Chapter One: Improbable Cause

“Stop, Inuyasha!”  Kagome screamed for what felt like the thousandth time.

She knew she couldn’t keep this up much longer and who was she kidding?  She was a human.

Recalling one of the many times he had told her, she could almost hear is voice in her ear;

 “Humans are slow and way too weak to go against a Hanyou like me”

 However, at this moment, praying with all hope that he’d been wrong was all that could be done.

Tripping over branches and roots certainly wasn’t going to help her for much longer, but on Kagome ran.  Towards - Whatever could save her at this moment.

Who knows what had even set him into a rage? One minute they had been walking together towards the well, actually, arguing mostly, and then he had suddenly doubled over.  He’d seemed almost in pain so she had placed a hand on his shoulder to check on him, only to be shoved back by his angry beast.

And now, she was running for her life with no clue if she was going to survive.

So far, no other soul had been seen and the debate whether or not that was a good thing was cut short with a melodic, clear voice.

“Kagome Nee-Sama, what are you doing running through the forest?”

Even as she heard the little girl’s voice, her heart filled with dread… Inuyasha was out of his mind and could hurt Rin without pause.

And right now Kagome could hear him crashing through the forest not far behind so the choice was made clear.

Scooping the girl up with a curse, the exhausted miko continued her run with renewed vigor… The life of the child she’d come to love hanging in the balance, pushing her feet faster and faster.

Even as her heart knew it was useless, on she ran; past the well, farther and deeper into the forest until all she saw were trees and more trees.

He was getting closer; she could hear him better now… Panic rose to choke her and steal her breath.

“Inuyasha, please stop!  Remember who you are!  Please, you could hurt Rin!”  She screamed behind her.  Even as useless as it felt, she had to try… Her friend was in there somewhere; He had to be.

And as all stories go, she ran out of time, er- Out of forest.

There Kagome was, staring into the deep chasm carved by a once well- placed Windscar, but that time, it had been Naraku’s demise for which it was intended;

‘I guess now it’s meant for me,’ she chuckled morbidly to herself while the bundle gripped by the panicked miko looked on in confusion.

“Are we playing a game, Nee-Sama?” Rin asked innocently, and Kagome spared her a glance filled with adoration.

Cut too short, was the moment, for it would only be a few precious seconds till he was upon them.

As fast as her feet could carry her, she hid Rin among the shrubbery outlining the chasm.

“Please, Rin, for your sake and for mine, be as quiet as a mouse!  And don’t move!”

Hoping that the younger girl would understand, she watched with pride as Rin quieted and drew two fingers across her lips like “Kagome Nee-Sama” had shown her.

Unbidden, tears sprang to the grown woman’s eyes as she gave one final kiss to the child’s forehead and then made her way to the edge of the precipice, hoping to draw the raging beast’s attention as far away from the hiding spot as possible.

Standing with her hands by her sides, she gave herself a mental pat on the back for not screaming in terror as a usually-kind eyed half demon made his way into the small clearing by the scar in the earth.

His eyes were no longer kind, and no soul could be seen in them through the blood crimson stained with turquoise – a trait of his lineage, diluted as it may be.

Tears fell from the prettiest eyes in all of Japan as she thought not of how her life would end, but of how her first love would react once he’d realize what he’d done.  Tears, tears and more tears… But they could not silence the savage growling being as it approached her, slowly, almost as if sizing up a threat.

Kagome could only stand there, certain death descending on her from every side… She was trapped.

Her final thought, words even.

“Rin, Close your eyes and don’t open them till I tell you to!” She yelled into the air.

Aggravated by the sound, the Hanyou known as Inuyasha lunged, forcing Kagome off the edge.

Even as she fell to her death, her only hope was that someone or something could save the little girl with the heart-wrenching smile before it was too late.
