The seldom, snow white stratocumulus graced the heavens above; looking as if they were fractions taken from cotton balls and stretched to form perfect pillows. Lazily swimming across the oxford midnight sky, some thousands of feet above mother earth, the clouds were simply...free. Free from the hardships of treking thoughout Japan's Sengoku Jidai; Free from being bound by honor to uphold the search for the remaining shards of the great Shikon no Tama; Free from morose love triangles.
Relaxing under the first quarter moon, its resplendent shine dulled by the orb's alignment, Kagome lay in a field of serenity. Dark onyx silken tendrils splayed out on a canvas ranging from kelly to malachite shaded blades. Young, calloused fingers ripped sweet greenery from the earth as pearly whites worried a succulent, soft coral pink portion of flesh.
Bruised, distressed, and bent knees met one another every second as loafer clad feet stayed glued to the earth. Molten chocolate eyes with pupils rimmed in brown sugar held the gaze of the midnight sky; every once in a while dancing across the scenery to survey the treeline for unwanted guests. Thoughts racing faster than her hanyo companion at top speed, the eighteen year old woman was experiencing a myriad of emotions.
"Inuyasha...Why?" Voice miniscule as she called out to the heavens, questioning her fickle companion. 'I know he's hurting...We're all hurting...but..' Even through her pain, the thoughts of the young woman stayed true to their magnanimous form. 'Why would he just leave after her death?' She pondered for what seemed like the hundredth time that dark, gloomy night.
"He just left...left us..." A usually jovial voice managed to mutter out, "He just left...he left....me" with the last syllable, a strong spirit cracked. Voice breaking as chocolate depths began to cloud with emotions that were yet to be released "He left me...with..." Realization stung throughout her body like a vicious snake closing its jaws around her milky, pliant skin; sinking its needle-pointed fangs into her love.
Shooting into a sitting position, back ramrod straight, Kagome's breath flew from her lungs with an anguish stricken outward gasp. Small hands gripped a sullied blouse, positioned directly above her most treasured, beating possession. The love she harbored was melting her insides, eating away at everything and only leaving sorrow in its wake; this sorrow was her poison. Fogged orbs gazed onto the landscape, its mesmerizing beauty was lost to her this night. "You...Why would you leave me with-"
"This Sesshomaru" Was spoken in such an insouciant, baritone that Kagome didn't even need to whip her head around to see him. Not caring if her weakness disgusted him, the woman released her poison. Misty vision soon became clear as white-hot sorrow skillfully scaled its way down unblemished, ivory skin. Cheeks tinging pink with the feverish heat of her tears and emotions, Kagome felt the burning.
Even being a distance away, the regal daiyokai could practically feel every liquid, emotion and sound seep from the trembling form in front of him. Calculating, molten gold observed a feminine, pointed chin dimple and quiver. Superior eyesight drank in flushed, plump lips puckering and folding together; in an attempt to conceal cries of heartbreak. Equipped with a nose thousands of times sharper than a human's, was Sesshomaru; this impeccable, sharpened sense of smell detected the heady scent of salt in the air. Highly sensitive elven ears picked up the erratic beating of the young woman's distressed heart; practically smashing against her ribcage.
It wasn't enough, the sorrowful poison burned her insides. The feeling of abandonment ate at her flesh like flames licking against wood. 'I need to know' ran through Kagome's mind like a broken record, her insides begged for reprieve. "When...when is he coming back?" Her anguish ridden voice cried out, sorrow and disbelief saturating her tone. Hidden questions laced throughout that one, simple inquiry.
"This one does not know" No emotion, nothing accompanied his reply. Not even the smallest hint of curiosity was in his tone, didn't he wonder where Inuyasha was? The answer was no; Sesshomaru was here for one reason and one reason only. In preparation for the final battle with Naraku, the daiyokai and his entourage joined Inuyasha's pack of misfits. Upon the death of Kikyo, Inuyasha receded into himself and fled from his pack, leaving one request.
"Watch over Kagome you bastard" were the last words spoken to Sesshomaru by his half-sibling. Somewhere in the west, the combined packs were positioned safely in a large clearing; resting after the taxing battle with the evil hanyo and loss of the undead priestess. Just before the blood orange dawn appeared above the treetops, Inuyasha appeared before his older sibling; requesting one thing before fleeing the clearing. This turn of events left Sesshomaru the undisputed alpha with no limitations, and a devastated Kagome.
"It is time" Was his statement, leaving no room for argument or excuses. Honestly not knowing if she could pick herself up and carry her heavy sorrow on trembling knees, Kagome pleaded "I can't, it hurts" voice once again betraying the storm of emotions swirling throughout her confused soul.
Raising a naturally sculpted eyebrow, Sesshomaru spoke the one thing that could make the human woman follow him any place. "Your kit is waiting" Pleased with his cunning as he heard a surprised gasp and whimper of "Shippo", the statuesque dai turned and started away from the field.
Watching as all six feet and four inches that was Sesshomaru turned to leave, Kagome observed closely. Flowing, silver silken strands swished and grazed the backs of his sturdy knees as his silk kimono's beauty was dimmed by the moon's shadows. Finding herself moving suddenly after one simple beckoning called out into the night, Kagome made her way back to camp; pain flavored tears, burning poison and flowing locks accompanied the priestess.
"Come" Was the last word to slip past his lips, carried to ears and a body already set in motion.
