Destined to Fail

This is for Kirai's Neverending Title Challenge! She gave me the title 'Destined to Fail' and I have to wonder if she was implying something. Oh well, enjoy.

P.s. I do not own Inuyasha. If I did, this would not be on a fanfiction website.

Destined to Fail

                “Dare.”

The girls in the room giggled at Sango’s answer. For most of the game everyone had been saying truth and this was the first dare. Wearing a worn pair of shorts and an old P.E. shirt, Sango looked completely ready for anything they could dish out. Ayame looked around for inspiration and her eyes landed on the innocent birthday girl.

“I dare you to kiss Kagome on the mouth.”

Kagome’s head shot up and her eyes widened in surprise. Before she could protest, Sango moved forward and pressed her lips against Kagome’s. Kagome scrambled back and tried to rub away the kiss with the back of her hand.

“Ewww, I can’t believe you actually did that.” Kagome said, slightly muffled by the hand still franticly rubbing.

“You know you liked it.” Sango teased, causing the other girls to laugh. Kagome glared at her and went back to her place in the circle.

The group was an odd one, all girls but completely different. Sango in her masculine clothing and attitude sat next to a very elegant Kikyo who wore a very modest white robe over her night gown. Opposite them was Kagome in black cotton tank and blue flannel pants, Ayame in a very fuzzy red and white night gown, the only demon among them, and Rin in a very childish orange and white checkered pajama set. All were in their teens, around 18 in age.

Sango ignored Kagome’s glare and looked around the circle, rubbing her hands together evilly.

“Rin, truth or dare?” Rin jumped a little at her name.

“Truth!” She instinctively knew not to get a dare from Sango.

“Have you done it with Shippo yet?” At this all the girls broke out in groans; so much for being mature woman. Rin turned bright pink thinking about her boyfriend.

“No.” She said in a small voice, cheeks flaming even brighter. Kagome leaned over and patted her back.

“Good for you.” Kagome scowled at Sango for snickering.

“Only you would think so Kagome.” Sango shook her head sadly. “Rin, your turn.”

Rin looked over the girls and her eyes fell on Kikyo.

                “Kikyo, truth or dare?”

Kikyo didn’t even think about it.

“Dare.” Kikyo figured Rin wouldn’t give her anything to bad and if she didn’t do any dares the others would nag her.

“I dare you to….  Uh…. Make a dog noise whenever someone says your name for the next week.”

The other girls giggled as Kikyo frowned.

                “Kikyo.” Sango said.

                “Bark.”

                “Kikyo.” Ayame said.

                “Bark.”

                “Kikyo.” Kagome said.

                “Woof.”

The girls giggled again and Kikyo scowled at them. She turned on Kagome.

                “Kagome.”

“Dare.” Figuring that it was her birthday, Kagome felt that she should let loose. And her cousin would never give her a dare that would get her in trouble.

“Hm…” Kikyo thought about it. Kagome was 18 today, an adult, a woman. She was also terribly single. “I dare you to follow Sesshomaru around for the whole day tomorrow without him finding out.”

Kagome was completely surprised. During the game, the question of who she had a crush on had never come up but now Kikyo was telling her to follow him around. How did she know that Kagome had feelings for the cold brother of one of her best friends? Or was there another reason?

“Kikyo, that’s mean.” Kagome said with a pout. The pout turned up at the sides when the other girl barked. “How am I going to follow him without him knowing? He can smell me!”

“You’ll just have to figure that out; you know what happens if you don’t compete your dare.” The other girls grinned as Kagome frowned. The consequences where too daunting to think about backing out.

“Not only that, but if he goes into any buildings that are not his house you have to go in too. You can’t just stay in your car.” Kagome’s eyes snapped to Sango and she narrowed her eyes. Sango smiled.

“Fine but I’ll have to set an alarm to wake me up or I might get to his house and he will have already left.” Kagome tired to use this as a way to get out of it. She knew that only Rin liked to get up early in the mornings, especially on a weekend.

“That’s okay, we can see you off.” Sango said happily. She liked the idea and was hoping that the dare would help her friend along. All of the women in the room had seen Kagome mooning over the silver haired heartbreaker, but up until now she had done nothing about it. Now that she was 18, it was good for a change.

                Kagome glared at Sango.

                “Sango, truth or dare.”

Kagome drove down the street and glanced at the long driveway on her right that led to a huge mansion like house. Her eyes eagerly scanned the cars, hoping to see that the sleek black car that belonged to Sesshomaru was gone. Her eyes landed on it and she wanted to yell at the injustice. The time was seven thirty and she had hoped he would be out of the house by six. It seemed her luck was out.

Kagome drove past the house and parked far enough away that she could see if the car left, but no one would guess what she was doing. After waiting for what seemed like hours but was in truth only twenty minutes, the black car backed out of the driveway and towards her car. Kagome squeaked and ducked, hoping that Sesshomaru had not seen her with his enhanced eyesight. She waited about a minute after hearing the car pass before straightening and following with hers.

While Sesshomaru’s car was high-tech, Kagome’s was a small silver car, very common. Kagome was very thankful for that now that she was playing detective; hopefully it would help her car blend in and Sesshomaru wouldn’t notice anything fishy.

They drove for a few miles, Kagome keeping two or three cars between their cars at all times, before they reached Sesshomaru’s destination, a small diner. Kagome was forced to keep driving or go directly behind Sesshomaru into the parking lot, so she had to turn around at the next light. She drove back and parked a few cars way from his car.

Kagome got out of her car and went around to the entrance. She stopped a second before opening the door and wondered how great it would be if she opened the door and Sesshomaru was on the other side. Instead of ruining her dare so early, Kagome went around to the back and peeked into the kitchen. When no one was watching, she snuck in and rushed through to the door that led to the dining room and slipped out. There was a wall in front of the door, probably so no one would have to see the people coming in and out of the kitchen. Kagome went out one of the sides and found herself in the main room where most of the customers were sitting. She found an open table and sat down, which was okay because it was a seat yourself kind of place.

Kagome picked up the menu and held it up so that others would think she was looking at her choices. Really, she was looking around for Sesshomaru. Her eyes passed over red hair, blond hair, black hair… Kikyo? What was Kikyo doing there?

Kagome continued looking and finally saw that Sesshomaru was sitting in a corner seat by himself. He was sipping something from a mug, probably tea or coffee, and a news paper was open on the table. Kagome figured she should have picked one up to hide behind, but she had gone right to his house.

She did worry about his nose sniffing her out, but she had found an old bottle of some special scent that was suppose to hide smells from demons. She wasn’t sure how old it was or if it had an expiration date, so she could only hope that it would work.

The waiter came over and placed a mug with overflowing whipped cream her table.

“Uh, I haven’t ordered yet.” Kagome was pretty sure that her table had been empty when she sat down.

“Someone said to give it to you and to tell you that you should have worn a better jacket.” The waiter walked off before she could say anything else. Kagome shook her head and looked towards Sesshomaru. He still had the paper in front of his face, and she didn’t remember any waiters or waitresses at his table. She looked towards Kikyo to see that her cousin was looking at her. They shared a smile and Kagome felt relieved that Sesshomaru had not caught on. The drink turned out to be hot coco.

Kagome was wishing for more layers, but there was no way to go home to get another jacket or to change. Instead, she was stuck in November with a small black jacket. She had stupidly decided to wear black on black and the only jacket Kagome had was a small one, not only that, the black stood out more than other colors would.

The waiter came back and she ordered her breakfast. After eating a bagel and eggs, she waited patiently for Sesshomaru to finish whatever it was that he was doing behind the newspaper. Ten minutes later and the paper was folded up, forcing Kagome to look away from Sesshomaru so that he wouldn’t catch her watching him. If her luck held, he wouldn’t even see her.

Sesshomaru left the diner and Kagome was forced to hurry after him. She took the kitchen exit again and luckily was not caught. She hid behind the building and waited for Sesshomaru to unlock his car and get in. Once he was inside, she ran to her car and slipped in, having kept the car unlocked in case of the need for a speedy getaway. Kagome waited for Sesshomaru’s car to leave the parking lot then followed at a sedate speed. If the whole day passed as easily as this, Kagome figured she wouldn’t have any trouble.

They continued down the road for some time before Sesshomaru’s car pulled in front of a flower shop. Kagome pulled up on the other side of the road and ran across when traffic was thin, not wanting to lose Sesshomaru. She didn’t think that the shop had a back entrance, so she opened the front door and prayed that Sesshomaru was not walking out at that moment.

The shop was large, about the size of four rooms combined. Kagome couldn’t help but pause and smell the air filled with the scent of flowers of all types. Rin was sitting behind the counter and chirped a greeting.

“Kagome, I didn’t know you were coming… Oh yeah! Sesshomaru-sama is in the back.” For reasons Kagome did not know, Rin had always called Sesshomaru that. Sesshomaru in turn treated the young woman like a little sister.

“Thanks Rin.” Kagome said with a smile. She heard footstep coming towards them and hurried to hide in behind a giant flowery decoration. Peeking through the flowers, Kagome could sort of see Sesshomaru going to the counter. Rin chirped a response to something he said and Sesshomaru headed out the door. Kagome hurried to follow and was unprepared for Rin to through a thing of flowers at her.

“Good luck.” Rin said with a wicked smile. Kagome wanted to ask her about it, but she was going to lose Sesshomaru if she didn’t hurry.

Kagome watched Sesshomaru’s car drive off to the left and stop at a red light. She rushed through the traffic, hoping not to get hit, and safely made it to her car. After putting the flowers, a dozen red roses that luckily had some kind of water bag on the bottom, in the passenger seat, Kagome started the car and waited for the light to turn green. When it did, she waited for Sesshomaru’s car to start moving before she did a U-turn and followed.

The next stop was completely unexpected; a candy store she liked. Kagome had never thought of Sesshomaru as someone that liked sweets, now herself, she loved candy. Her love of candy was actually how she had made friends with Ayame who worked at the store.

Kagome parked her car a safe distance away and jogged to the entrance. The inside was big enough that she didn’t worry about running into Sesshomaru.

The doors opened automatically and Kagome walked through into a child’s dream. Lollipops and bubble gum, ice cream and hot chocolate, powered drinks and jawbreakers; Kagome recognized this as the best candy store in town.

Ayame stood behind the counter and gave her a secret smile. She pointed to the side and Kagome saw Sesshomaru looking at some of the different bags of candy. Kagome hurried to hide behind a wall of different shapes of gummy candies. Kagome tried to see past the sugary confections, but all she could see was a distorted picture of Sesshomaru through the candy jars. She did see him go to the counter and buy something from Ayame, but she couldn’t see what it was.

Sesshomaru’s image moved out the door and Kagome moved to follow. She looked sadly back at the candy, as if it was calling her name, but after a shake of her head she was back on track and going to the door.

                “Kagome!”

Kagome turned to see Ayame holding out a heart shaped chocolate box. Confused, she took the box and stared at Ayame.

“You better hurry or you’ll lose him.” Ayame smiled and gestured to the door. Kagome wondered why all of her friends were acting weird, but she didn’t have time to worry about the crazy that was going around. Instead, she left the shop and walked down the sidewalk to her car.

Sesshomaru’s car left the candy store and was well down the street before Kagome caught up with him. Her candy sat with her flowers on the passenger seat, but she didn’t have time to enjoy it at the moment. Hoping he would go home soon so that she could dip into the chocolate, Kagome watched the streets and had to sigh when she found out they were going further away from his house. Finally, he stopped at a well known club that catered to younger adults who could not drink. As he was a demon, Sesshomaru was most likely thousands of years old and could drink all he wanted, but the club was still one of the most popular.

Kagome got out of her car and trailed her quarry to the front door.  There was no line outside like clubs in movies had, but there was a bouncer who took the entrance fee at the door. Kagome was unsurprised to see that Sango was the one on entrance duty today; it seemed that she was going to see everyone today and Sango was the last of those who had played the day before.

Sesshomaru entered the club after a quick word with Sango. Kagome walked up to Sango and dug around in her pockets, hoping that she had four dollar for the entrance fee. Sango put up a hand and smiled at her.

“Don’t worry, it’s covered. Go on in and have a... fun time.” Kagome smiled back happily and entered the club. It seemed like today was her day for free things.

The inside of the club was dark with only the flashing lights on the dance floor and little tea lights on tables to show the way. Kagome looked around for Sesshomaru, but with the room so dim she couldn’t make out any familiar people in the crowd. She was guessing that he had come to meet up with a girl friend, possible the reason he had gone to the other store beforehand. Chances were that he was dancing with her at that very moment, so Kagome joined the throng of people.

The music was a popular rock and roll song, one that Kagome had no trouble dancing to. She danced by herself and with strangers with the same zeal, happy one way or the other. Once the song was done, she said goodbye to her unknown dance partner and tried to push her way from the crowd.  There was no way she was going to find Sesshomaru in the crowd, so the best idea was to sit somewhere that she could watch the door from.

Kagome had reached the outside of the group just as a slow song came on. She took a step towards one of the tables, but a hand grabbing her arm stopped her. Unexpectedly, Kagome was pulled into someone’s arms and drawn into the dance. She glanced up to see none other than Sesshomaru looking down at her.

“Sesshomaru?” She tried to seem surprised, which she was, but about the fact that he was there, not that he had pulled her into a dance. “What are you doing here?”

“Dancing with you.” He said. Kagome frowned and a flash of light showed her that he had a small grin on his face. “Did you really think I wouldn’t notice you following me?”

Kagome’s frown turned into a scowl.

“You knew all along?” She asked thinking back to if she had done something he could have noticed.

“Since I left my house.” He tugged her closer to his body and gently forced her into the dance. Kagome didn’t feel like dancing with him anymore as she was annoyed with the world in general, but his arms were tender steel around her.

“Why didn’t you just tell me before this? Why did you take me to all of those stores?” Kagome was so confused by all of this, but the big thing in her mind that blocked out most other thought was that she was dancing with her crush. Never had she been so close to the object of her adoration and it was starting to make her feel light headed.

“Because I wanted to go on a date with you.”

Those words seemed to echo in Kagome’s head endlessly. The first few times, she had no idea of the meaning and was only thinking of how wonderful his voice was, how smooth and seductive it was.  Finally the meaning seeped in and she was left looking up at Sesshomaru with a good mix of fear and hope; fear that this was all a lie or a really bad joke, and hope that it was really happening.

“Would you like to go on future dates with me?” He asked. Though Kagome could hear the amusement in his tone, she eagerly nodded. He leaned forward and kissed her cheek.

“Next time, we will take one car.”

Kagome shiver in the cold air. The same girls from her birthday stood off to the side in a line facing her, all wearing nice, warm clothing. Kagome wanted to be upset with them, but she figured that what she had gotten out of the dare was worth the consequences of losing.

There was a splash of water and a high pitched yelp. Sesshomaru watched from a tree undetected by the girls as his new girlfriend splashed around completely nude in the high school’s pool. He was amused by her, that was for sure, and he waited patiently for her to finish her swimming. Once she was done, he would offer his assistance in getting her warm and he hoped she would agree. She should have known that anyone who tried to pull one over on Sesshomaru was destined to fail.

Okay, so it is a little cheesy. This is one of my first short stories, you could say that it is more of an experiment. Thank you for reading if you got this far, and if you did not too bad. Please review as long as it is not to say that my story sucks. Love.
