Not Enough Wax in the World

It was simply wax...

The first time it was lit she'd cried tears of happiness. They'd extinguished it together, vowing to light it every year in memory of that day.

Nothing but wax dripping down the side as tears slid down her cheeks, marring the intricate carvings decorating it just as her tears marred the beauty of her eyes.

Just wax pooling on the table, cooling until hard to the touch, like the tears forming a puddle on the empty plate before her. Like her heart growing colder, hardening against the pain. The wax, her heart, and the dinner she'd carefully prepared all going cold... waiting.

He'd promised never to forget, to come home early to celebrate, to love her forever, but he wasn't very good at keeping promises.

It was almost midnight when he entered the dark house, the light of a single flickering flame giving him hope. She hadn't put it out yet. She was still waiting.

Sesshoumaru rushed into the dining room and their eyes met just before the candle burned out. Their love was supposed to last as long as the candle did, but now there was nothing left of it.

"You promised," she whispered into the darkness.

Silently he set a single item on the table.

"I needed more time," he said before lighting the new candle. The flame melted her heart and she smiled. "There's not enough wax in the world to burn for as long as I'll love you."
