The sea roared, the full moon above swirling it’s depths like nothing else could. The wind howled, whistling and taking wisps of the sea up into the air with it. It was a night where you would not expect anyone to be out for a stroll. A night where even the bravest would avoid the sea at all cost, for when it stormed, the phantoms of the deep would come out to play.
This night was no different. On the beach lurked those from the deep, laughing and dancing without being heard over the wind. Screeches and cackles echoed over and through the rocks, and within the chaos, Kagome danced as well.
The night of the full moon was the only night that she was allowed on land. Her fin would turn to legs and she would walk ashore to dance and sing with her brothers and sisters of the dark and swirling world they lived in.
Black swirling hair whipped around her as the wind grabbed with it and played with its length, throwing it in the air and tumbling it around her. Deep blue ocean eyes sparkled in merriment as the moon flickered off their depths.
But within those eyes, was a sorrow she held concealed. One that she would reveal to no one but herself. She longed for someone…
She was the last of her kind… the last of the Mermaids. The chance of her finding someone… was no chance at all. Her heart trembled at the thought of being alone for the rest of her life. It made it harder to enjoy the full moon. To enjoy dancing with her fellow ocean dwellers.
Every time she twirled around, she would see another couple. Everyone else in the ocean had someone, but she was ever along.
A sound disturbed the reverie that was her thoughts, a sound that made the festivities stop.
“Someone is coming…” the wind whispered, and all but Kagome dashed into the ocean. Kagome stood as if struck dumb. Her eyes swept the darkness, searching for the human who had disturbed their play.
And in the darkness she caught a glimpse of him. And realized something stunning, he was not human either.
Yellow eyes glinted in the moonlight, a shimmering silver pelt glittered. A wolf that was bigger than any she had ever seen loped toward her. Fierce teeth gnashed as the lumbering beast caught sight of her.
Kagome stayed where she was, for she knew that this was no normal wolf. He was enchanted just as she was. His soul, though it did not call to the sea, did call to the woods and the nature around him. His energy fairly called to all living things around her. She was intrigued. She had never met man or beast like him.
And before her eyes, he transformed into his human counterpart. He was magnificent. Long silver hair hung down his back and over his broad shoulders. His eyes remained the color of amber, and grew wide as he analyzed her coldly. She held back the need to shudder and met his eyes without wavering.
A growl was caught in the wind and swirled around Kagome. She laughed under her breath.
“I am not afraid of you, if that is what you wish Mr. Wolf.”
“My name is Sesshoumaru. What is yours little Mermaid?” he murmured.
Kagome smiled at the fact that he could sense that she was a mermaid, he was definitely one with nature.
“Kagome.” She responded, looking back at the ocean where her comrades had departed.
She looked back over to where Sesshoumaru stood, and saw that he had disappeared into the night once more. With a wistful sigh, she jumped back into the water that was her home… Curious if she would ever see her wolf again.
