Odd One
“Hey look at that!” Shippou pointed to a flock of sheep grazing in a farmer’s field. “That one is black!”
Kagome looked in the direction of the pointing claw. She could clearly see one black sheep in the center of what appeared to be a fluffy cloud of white. Of course she knew what would be coming next. There was no denying the little kit would question the nature behind the black sheep.
“Why is it black?”
“Because just like humans and demons come in many different shapes, sizes and colours, so do animals. That particular sheep is different by colour.”
Her answer satisfied him enough for the time being it seemed since Shippou didn’t ask another question at least not right away. For the rest of the day though the young kit pointed out random small things and asked about them. At long last the group began to make camp.
During the night, Kagome woke to the strangest sensation rolling over her skin. Her eyes snapped open and she sat up, looking around for anything out of the ordinary. To the west she could feel something beckoning to her, attempting to pull her spirit towards the massive power she could had picked up on in her sleep.
She studied each member of her group and, once confirming they were asleep, Kagome got to her feet and headed in the direction she could feel the pull. After wandering through a few fields and a dense wooded area, she came upon a large group of youkai gathered together. She hid behind a tree, watching the scene. It only took a few seconds to realize that every single youkai was an inu. They were all covered in thick, black fur and were circled around a single silver inu. The picture reminded her of the earlier sight of the white sheep and the single odd black sheep.
Suddenly each head turned and faced her direction. At first she wanted nothing more than to turn tail and run because of the massive number. However, something told her to stay.
A whispering in her mind distracted her thoughts, and she didn’t realize that she was moving forward, or that she was working a path through the black inu. It was only when she was standing before the lone silver inu that she realized she wasn’t in her hiding place any longer.
There were a few moments of confusion then the form before her shifted. Her eyes widened, though she wasn’t sure why she was surprised.
“Sesshomaru? What… what’s going on?”
“You are this Sesshomaru’s chosen. You heard my call and answered.”
Kagome looked around, when she saw a movement out of the corner of her eyes. The rest of the inu’s were beginning to pile fur together, making a fur bed for their lord and master. With the near constant whispering within her mind, she couldn’t reject the inu leading her to their bed for the night.
