Chapter 1

A dark haired woman sat anxiously on the edge of a soft green bath tub, waiting for her world to either crash into despair or explode into happiness.

She couldn't believe that at this moment in time her entire being was centered on a white stick and what the results could mean to her marriage and future.

A baby would be so welcome, so loved by them both as she and her Taiyouki husband had wanted ...no, yearned for a child. He for an heir and something that was a part of the woman he loved and she, the almost overpowering urge at times to be a mother, to nurture a new life.  And something that was created between the two of them as well.

She supposed it was in her blood since she was a Miko. She was linked to the earth, to nature itself.  In the Shrine teachings, a Miko was a gift from the Kami, a living embodiment of love, kindness and peace. Their job was to keep the people happy and keep darkness of the soul at bay.

But there was one drawback.  In the old days Mikos were infused with a power to purify the evil youkai that traveled the land, destroying property, crops and many lives at will.

And now that power was working against her and the Tai that she had married for as soon as his seed was spilled within her body, it was purified rendering it useless. She had tried so many times to lock it away only to fail miserably.

Sesshomaru had told her many times that it didn't matter but she could see the disappointment in his eyes every time her menses started or when they walked past a couple holding their own baby. She could see the deep yearning for a child of their own.

She supposed that was why he had become so distant to her of late.  The Lord of the West wanted...no needed an heir for his lands and she was unable to produce one. How could he love a woman like that? No Taiyouki would want a mate that was barren, no matter what his feelings where.

But maybe what she had done had worked, maybe she had conceived this time. Slowly she leaned forward to check the little piece of plastic.

A blue plus sign shone back at her. Kagome's breath whooshed from her body as shock and the euphoric feeling of happiness filled her.

She had done it. She was going to be a mother. Giddy laughter burst from her lips echoing through the elegant bathroom.

She and Sesshomaru were going to be... PARENTS. She was going to be a mommy!

Dashing from the bathroom with the test in hand, Kagome hurriedly dressed, anxious to share the breathtaking news with her beloved.  Running a quick brush through her hair, she checked her appearance in the large full length mirror.  She'd chosen a sapphire blue pantsuit that Sesshomaru particularly liked seeing her in. Under the classically cut jacket she wore a lacy white silk shell that had a small blue rose embroidered at the neck.

Smiling at the glow her face had taken on she decided to leave her long black hair loose to swing freely against her back and slipped on elegant black flats, forgoing her usual high heels. She was a pregnant lady now and no way was she going to chance an inopportune fall.  Humming happily she dropped the pregnancy test into her favorite purse, along with wallet, keys and lipstick and quickly made her way downstairs to the garage.

A soft smile gracing her face as she pulled away from the large mansion they lived in, Kagome drove down the long tree lined drive and headed to the office where her mate and husband worked.

Oh Kami, she could hardly wait to tell him that one of their wonderful dreams was coming true!

An Hour And A Half Later At TASHIO INDUSTRIES

Singing softly with the CD she had slipped in, Kagome pulled the black Lexus into the slot next to her husband's car. She still chuckled every time she used it and the thought of how it had come about. It had happened one morning when Sesshomaru had needed her to be present for a very important meeting. Upon arriving at the building, she'd driven around the underground garage and the surrounding blocks searching for a parking spot. One had finally been found three blocks away from Tashio Industries  and by the time she had walked back to the building, she had been hot, furious and sporting a large coffee stain on her white dress. And if that hadn't been bad enough she had snapped the heel off her favorite pair of shoes causing her to walk like a crippled duck. The blister that had formed on the back of her heel from now odd fitting shoe hadn't helped either.

Needless to say when she walked into Sesshomaru's office she hadn't been in the mood for his somewhat biting remarks about her missing the meeting. She had flown into a rage that had left him in no doubt on what she thought about his office and the lack of parking, she had also gone to on to question the legality of his parentage...or lack thereof.

A week later construction had started on expanding the parking garage and a plaque had gone up next to his own space.

 Reserved For Mrs. Kagome Tashio.

Kagome's amused remembrances were suddenly interrupted by a booming voice.

"Kagome, my dear child, what brings you here?"

A tall pale haired youkai made his way towards her, a welcoming smile on his face and a softness in his gold eyes that told the world how much he adored this young woman.

"Touga, how are you?" Kagome smiled happily, reaching out to hug the large man fiercely. "Are you just coming in?"

As she drew away, Touga scolded her playfully with a small tap to her nose. "How many times have I told you to call me Papa?"

Kagome chuckled. "Fine, how about I call you Grandpapa?"

"Grandpapa?" he asked confusion lacing his voice. "Why would you call me Grandpa...pa...oh my dear!" His eyes lit up joyfully as he realized what his beloved daughter in law was telling him. He drew her into his arms for another hug blinking away threatening tears.

"It worked, Papa.  Sesshomaru and I are going to have a baby." Kagome whispered in a choked voice as a tear slid down her face.

Touga pulled back slightly and wiped it away. "Does Sess know yet? "

Kagome shook her head slightly. "No, I was just going up to tell him."

"Well, come on, come on!" He said as he pulled the amused Kagome towards the private elevator that only he, Sesshomaru, Kagome and other family members used and forcefully punched the button. It would directly take them to the floor where his and Sesshomaru's offices were. "His Lord and Master of Ice will be over the moon when you tell him!"

Kagome's smile faltered slightly as the elevator doors opened immediately and slid silently closed behind them.  "I hope so, Touga." She said a slight sadness coloring her voice as the elevator rose quickly upwards towards its destination.

"What's wrong, my dear?" her father-in-law asked his own beaming smile dimming as he took in Kagome's unhappy face.

Kagome worried at her lip before replying. "Sesshomaru has been becoming increasingly distant from me. I think he may be considering casting me aside for someone who could give him an heir."

"NO!" Touga exclaimed vehemently, making her jump. "He loves you, Kagome. He would never leave you!"

"Touga, you know what kind of pressure the Tai Counsel has been putting on him." Kagome said softly as the shiny smoked mirrored doors slid open.

The tall TaiYoukai male whose son looked so much like him gently took her hand as they exited. "Kagome, I know Sess would never discard you. You are the one thing he gives a damn about. He loves you, even though he might not say so."

They were suddenly interrupted by a dark-haired violet eyes man coming down a nearby hallway.

"Kagome, how is the sexiest thing that ever married a Tai doing today?" he leered playfully as he hugged her.

His wife's best friend just chuckled at his antics. She was used to his remarks and faux lust ridden glances he gave her. She and Miroku had known each other in high school and gone to the same college as well. When she had met her new roommate, Sango, in the aforementioned college she had known she and Miroku would be perfect for each other. She had introduced the two of them hoping a match would be made.

They had becoming engaged a year later and marrying two months after college graduation. The newlyweds had been as happy as she and Sesshomaru, only they had started their family before them with a little girl they had named after her, Kagome, calling her Little Kags. And her little namesake took after her honorary aunt as a child, getting into as much, if not more trouble than she ever had.

"I'm fine, Miroku." She said smiling gently.  "How is my namesake? Still making yours and Sango's lives interesting?"

"Of course!" he chuckled. "Yesterday she decided to dump a whole can of coffee grounds on the floor to which she added her glass of milk made a lovely brown paste and proceeded to throughly paint the kitchen walls and Kilala."

Touga shook his head with feigned disgust, laughter dancing in his eyes as Kagome giggled at the picture her imagination supplied. "Oh Kami, what a mess that had to be! I can see what Sesshomaru and I can look forward to in the near future."

"Oh yes, you can be sure of that!" Miroku stopped laughing abruptly. "Near future?" His violet eyes began to sparkle as his smile began widen even further.

"It worked, Miroku! And I don't even know how to thank you for making it possible."  Kagome whispered as he hugged her small form. "I felt so guilty for keeping what you and I were doing secret from Sesshomaru but I didn't want him to get his hopes up."

Miroku pulled back exchanging smiling glances with her and Touga. "Have you told Sesshomaru yet? Please tell me you haven't! I want to see his icy expression crack when you tell him he is going to be a dog daddy."

Kagome shook her head, her black hair moving gracefully with the movement. "No, I was just heading there now to tell him."

"Wonderful!" exclaimed Miroku as stepped in behind her and Touga as they moved towards Sesshomaru's office. "Sango is in with him right now going over some contracts. We can tell her as well."

"And you can finally explain all those late nights you were with me. " Kagome said frowning slightly over her shoulder. "I hated not telling her as well but I was afraid Sesshomaru would pick up on her feelings if she knew what you and I were doing."

"Yeah that bothered me too but I think we will both be forgiven." He spoke quietly as they neared their destination.

"Am I to assume you two won't need to borrow my guest cottage any longer?" Touga said in a stage whisper winking at them both.

"Kami, Touga you don't need to make it sound like we were having an illicit affair." Kagome scolded as she opened her hand bag to pull out the used test. "Miroku and I decided that was this best way for Sess and I to have a child. Without his help this wouldn't be possible."

Snapping her purse closed, Kagome took a deep breath as nerves suddenly made themselves known.

Touga took a deep breath as well and suddenly frowned at what his senses were telling him. Anger welled and fear for what this beloved girl, his daughter by marriage would see when she opened the door to his son's office.

Too late he reached out to stop her as she flung the door wide, her smile dying a painful death at the view before her.

Her husband naked from the neck down, trousers undone  revealing his erect manhood and the silvery pubic hair that matched his long locks. The waistband hung precariously from his hips as he stooped over the nearly nude form of his assistant Sango, her best friend and Miroku's wife on the top of black marble topped desk.

"Sesshomaru...Sango, why?" Kagome whispered brokenly as the test dropped unnoticed from nerveless fingers.

"Yes, Sango, I would like to know that as well." Miroku hissed as his fist clenched at his side.

Sesshomaru slowly stood up as he tucked his erection back into his slacks. Sango scrambled off the desk and began to hurriedly hook up her bra and attempt to button her open blouse with shaking hands. She smoothed down her skirt, seemingly unable to look at her furious husband.

"Yes Sesshomaru, I would like to hear an explanation as well. And it had better be a damn good one!"  Touga snapped as his eyes glowed with fury. The blatant dishonoring of his mate and disregard of the mating vow was something he would never thought his emotionally stunted eldest son would do.

Especially not to the little Miko.

"Maybe you had better ask my mate...." He sneered making the word sound like the foulest thing in the world. "And her lover, Miroku. But please do not insult my intelligence and act as if you didn't know, Father, as I know you have been supplying the hideaway for their little trysts."

The Tai moved around the desk picked up the red silk shirt laying there and shrugged it on, buttoning it halfway before leaning indolently back against his desk like he hadn't just been caught literally with his pants down.

"Sess, Miroku and I have done nothing wrong!" Kagome cried out as tears of pain washed down her face, holding out a shaking hand towards him.

"DON'T LIE TO ME, WOMAN!" he roared out as his own hand flashed out grasping her small one and began to crush it painfully. "What the late nights when I couldn't get a hold of you on your cell and you coming home reeking of his scent! I have video of you meeting him at my own father's cottage!"

Kagome cried out as the bones of her slender hand began to grind together and his sharp deadly nails began to pierce delicate skin. She could feel them creak as they threatened to break under his furious onslaught.

"Please, Sesshomaru let go! You're hurting me!"

"Not nearly as much as you've hurt me, bitch!" he spat as his eyes began to glow the feral red of betrayal and fury. He tightened his grip further, the tips of her fingers visibly turning purple from sheer pressure.

"Sesshomaru, release your mate! NOW, PUP!" Touga ordered as he started forward intent on making his son obey before he seriously damaged her hand.

"Sesshomaru stop!" Sango screamed tearfully as she moved towards the struggling couple. "Yes they have hurt us but please don't make things worse by injuring your mate!"

"This whore is no longer my mate!" The incensed Inu hissed venomously.  "She no longer deserves the honor of that title!"

Miroku moved toward the incensed demon afraid what Kagome would do, especially given his state of mind.  If her powers read Sesshomaru as a threat, everything he'd helped Kagome with could be undone.

Then he felt it, a sudden build up power that made the elder Tashio rear back away from his son and his now glowing mate. The hair went up along his neck and arms before a sudden shockwave slammed out, knocking the perceived threat away from Kagome.

Sesshomaru was forcefully flung away from his wife to crash with a thud into a wall taking several cabinets with him. He lay there a moment, his clothing and skin smoking from the amount of purifying force she had applied.

Kagome stalked over and picked up the forgotten pregnancy test. She made her way back over to his still prone form as he pushed a fallen cabinet off him.  She flung it angrily at him and watched bitterly as it struck him in the brow, that same brow she had so lovingly stroked many times after they had made love, to land on his chest.

"What is this, wench?!' he snarled at her picking it up to examine.

"It's a pregnancy test!" she snapped back. "I came here today to let you know you're to become a father, you idiot!"

Sesshomaru growled as he struggled to stand. "As if I would accept another man's bastard as my own! How stupid and gullible do you think I am?"

"Right now, pretty damn stupid!"  Kagome snapped back, her eyes glowing the brilliant blue of anger and suppressed power. "Miroku and I weren't having an affair, you jealous dog! He was helping suppress my Miko abilities so we could have a child, so you could finally have an heir!" Her voice broke as tears started to fall fast down her flushed face. "And so you wouldn't discard me like the counsel was urging you too. I wanted to surprise you so we kept it a secret as I couldn't have born seeing the disappointment on your face if we once again failed."

Kagome turned and stumbled from the room, her sobs echoing accusingly back down the hall.

"Oh Kami, what have we done?" a horrified Sango whispered, slowly backing away towards an undamaged wall.

Touga stared in anger and disappointment at the shocked Inu.  "You are a fool, Sesshomaru. I allowed Miroku and Kagome to borrow the cottage to work on the suppression. I was there each time so their reputations would never come under question." Touga turned and moved towards the door. "And yet, your own jealousy and pettiness to get even may have destroyed your own pup for I don't see how it could have survived the power she unleashed against you."

"Where are you going?" came Sango's voice, sounding small as if she were afraid to draw attention to herself.

Touga turned back to her watching her flinch away from his harsh gaze. "I am going to go find Kagome. She needs to be with someone who cares for her and her well being." He gave a derisive sniff. "Right now she needs a friend she can trust."

He gave a small grim smile of satisfaction as Sango again flinched and paled further, the well aimed barb hitting home and walked out of the damaged office.  He impatiently moved aside the small knot of curious onlookers who started gathering at the noise walking quickly towards the elevator.

Miroku too turned from his disgraced wife and made his way to the door, feeling sick and terribly betrayed by one he never in his life would think to do this him and their family.

"Miroku?" Sango quietly called out tears clouding her voice.

Her husband stopped just short of the door, refusing to turn around. He couldn't bear to look at her and he was afraid if he did he would do something he would later regret. "Please don't come home, Sango. I will book you a room at The Regency Arms Hotel and send your bags and necessities by taxi."

"What about our daughter?" she sobbed wrapping her arms around her middle with one hand pressed to her aching heart.

"Little Kagome will stay with me as I believe you are not a positive influence on our daughter.  I will have my lawyer contact you so we may set up a schedule for you to see her." He said in an emotionless voice that would have done Sesshomaru proud had he been listening. Miroku walked out the door intent on helping Touga find his shattered friend, leaving behind two guilt-ridden and heart sick forms to contemplate just what they had done and the lives they may have possibly destroyed.
