.....
Kagome sat alone looking up at the clear blue sky from her spot next to the roots of a large tree. She could see Inuyasha resting atop the branches of a tree not far from her. Both Miroku and Sango sat talking by the river's bank, where they opted for resting a while ago. With Shippou soundly asleep next to her thighs, and nothing else to do, she opened her backpack and searched inside for a book to read.
A good romantic story is what she needed to ignore her loneliness while Inuyasha snored his worry away on his tree.
Her hand collided with a small pink book and she grabbed it. She laughed out loud and covered her mouth when Inuyasha and love birds by the river glanced at her. Quickly hiding her blush, she read the title. Eri had given her the little book as a joke for her seventeenth birthday a few weeks ago-along with other things that were threatening to make her turn crimson. She opened the book to any random page and read the title.
To Call Your True Mate.
If things were only that simple, Kagome thought. If only she could cast a spell and find her true soul mate that easily. She'd use it like calling a dog with a whistle. Smiling to herself sadly, she looked over to Inuyasha. Shaking her head, she looked down at the neatly typed spell and read it out loud out of curiousity.
"If there be a perfect match, this spell today will surely catch. the perfect one who is meant to be, shall find his way home to me. In perfect love and perfect trust, I send this out, but not from lust, This spell will guide us to unite, free will remains with us tonight."
Sighing, she dropped the book down into her pack and threw the defenseless yellow blob away from her. Just reading it had made her feel so lonely. There was no such thing as a soul mate, no such thing as real love! Glaring at the now sleeping and snoring hanyou, she jumped to her feet, startling Shippou awake. Sango turned to look at her from where she sat soaking her aching feet in the nice cold water.
"I'm going for a walk," Kagome declared, turning on her heel and entering the forest behind her. She heard Inuyasha snore, and rolled her eyes-mentally wishing he'd slip and fall off that damned tree of his!
It wasn't long before she lost herself in her thoughts. Her mind kept coming back to the spell she'd read, and couldn't help but hope it would come true. Deep inside though, she knew it was only for fun. Such things simply did not exist. A deep throaty growl stopped her dead on her tracks. Her head shot up and she looked around and yet she saw nothing. She circled around, and saw only trees.
Again, she heard the growl, and this time her feet shot into action. Running through the trees until her sides hurt and her lungs heaved. She broke through the line of trees and out of the forest, halting in the middle of a large vast clearing. Kagome took in a deep breath and turned around, forcing herself to face whoever was chasing her. What she saw not only scared the living daylights out of her, but confused her. Before her, a large white fluffy canine stood, it's large pink tongue sticking out to the side of it's mouth.
Kagome took a deep calming breath and would of run when the dog took a step forward if she hadn't seen it's bright red markings on its face. Frowning, she debated whether to come close to it or leaving it. There was only one being she'd ever seen such markings on-and she did not want to see him again.
At least not in such a form.
The large furry dog tried approaching her, and Kagome took a step back. It sensed her distress and started whining, couching down until it's belly was touching the soft dark dirt. It crossed it's powerful paws before him and placed its massive head on it's paws, whining at her. Whatever it was trying to convey to her, it was not aggression.
Slowly, Kagome approached the mammoth canine, "Lord Sesshomaru?"
The dog snapped it's head up in recognition and stuck it's tongue out, it's ears standing alert. Well, at least in knows its name, Kagome though. "What happened? Why are you in your dog form?" Kagome asked tentatively.
The dog looked at her and tilted its head, staring at her. It barked loudly, sending a flock of birds to the air from all around the forest. Kagome covered her ears and laughed gaily. She reached out with one hand and furrowed her tiny hand into the fluffy fur of the white dog. She looked up and saw him staring down at her, it's deep crimson eyes bright with intelligence.
If Sesshomaru was in there, then why was he acting so out of character? Kagome wondered. It wasn't like him to act like an actual dog. He was proud and deadly, a silent strength all his own. Sesshomaru lowered his muzzled and rubbed his cold wet nose on her shoulder, sniffing her and surprising her.
"Alright, Sesshomaru, I don't know what happened to you, but I have to go," Kagome said, backing away. She knew if she didn't get back soon the gang would go out searching for her-something she could not allow. Kagome turned around ready to leave, when Sesshomaru's huge form jumped in front of her, barking and whining. Worried now, Kagome hushed him, forgetting who she was hushing.
"Hush boy! They'll hear you!" she cooed, petting the dog's large paw. At the physical contact, Sesshomaru immediately quieted and calmed down. "So, you want to come with me?" she asked, already knowing the answer.
Sesshomaru stared at her, again the strange glint of an immense intelligence shinning through his eyes. Kagome wondered where on earth Rin and the toad were at, but didn't ask. Perhaps he'd wouldn't want to tell her-or better yet-couldn't tell her.
Shaking her head, she sighed resigning herself. Inuyasha was not going to be happy about this. "Alright then, come on Sesshomaru. Guess you're coming with me," Kagome lead the way into the thick forest.
OoO
"What the hell is that bastard doing here?!" Inuyasha had not been happy. Not at all.
"Like I said, I found him this way. Well, he found me. I was walking through the forest and poof-I found him," Kagome explained, lying about some parts. If he knew she'd felt threatened at first-then he'd only use it to his advantage and throw Sesshomaru out.
At the moment, said lord sat on his hind legs behind Kagome looking quite smug. It growled and threatened to launch at Inuyasha when ever the hanyou tried approaching either him or Kagome. Kagome sighed and leaned back, feeling the soft fluff caressing her back in reassurance. Whatever had happened to Sesshomaru that kept him in his canine form, Kagome was not about to abandon the lord to its luck.
"Listen Inuyasha, he's staying and that's final," Kagome laid down the law-for once, surprising both the monk and slayer. Inuyasha huffed and puffed, glaring at the giant dog behind the miko. He turned around and walked away, casting one final glare over his shoulder towards the Western Lord.
"Yeah, go ahead and look all smug you ass, you slobbering dog!" he growled before jumping on his favorite tree and snoring way.
Kagome ignore his comment and unpacked her sleeping bag. Sango moved next to her and did her sleeping area. Miroku tried getting near the females to make his bed as close to them as possible, before a large muzzled baring huge glistening fangs stopped him dead on his tracks.
"Alright alright, I get it my Lord," Miroku sweated, taking a step back. Sesshomaru sat back on his haunches and carefully surveyed the females prepare for sleep.
Kagome shook her head at the monk and smiled at Sesshomaru, signaling he was okay.
From atop the tree, Inuyasha opened his eyes and looked down at the sleeping group. His eyes narrowed at his half brother, and he wondered what he was planning. Sesshomaru would never act the way he was acting, let alone protect a human. That's what he'd been doing, protecting Kagome every time he'd tried to get near Kagome. Shaking his head, he felt a faint pang in his chest-perhaps his bastard of a brother was, truly, in trouble. After all, what would cause him to loose control of his inner self?
"Kagome, do you think he's safe?" Sango asked nervously casting the giant dog a glance.
Kagome turned to her and smiled, "Yes, I think he is." In reality, she had no clue how she knew he wouldn't try and hurt them, she just did. As soon as she lowered herself into her sleeping bag, she heard the rustle of branches and looked up.
She saw Sesshomaru lay on his belly next to her, his large head next to her body. His muzzled laid resting next to her face and she instinctively turned towards him....She didn't know why, but once again, she remembered the spell she'd said earlier. She tried to remember the name, and warmth spread through her. To Call Your True Mate. That was it. With a gentle smile on her lips, she cuddled closer to the warmth of the giant dog next to her, tenderly laying one hand on its muzzle.

A/N: I hope you like this one. No, this isn't a new story. It was suppose to be a one shot, but I think I'll make it into a three chapter thing. Won't be that long....i hope. xD
I know, I really should work on my other story, "Rules of Seduction." I really did think I'd have the next chapter done by today--but I'm so dead frozen on it--STILL! Chapter simply hates me--grr!...SORRY LC Rose!!
And, I'm doing clinicals so I don't have much time. I'll try and update it though soon....
