Things hadn’t always been this way. No, not at all. Her life used to be happy, every moment filled with her mother, father, and little brother.
Then her father died. That was a set back in her happy future, but she was determined to be happy in his memory. It’s what he would’ve wanted.
She had been happy for a year after his untimely death before her mother remarried. Naraku was a spider hanyou with two daughters from his own previous marriage. Kagura, while a little tough around the edges, was nice and kind to her. Kanna was unnaturally quite, but nice none the less. Nothing like their father.
Naraku took it upon him self to ‘discipline‘ her and he saw fit. He mustve seen her as a god awful child, and she accepted it quietly. The beatings became rougher, and he threatened to hurt her mother and her siblings if she ever spoke up. So she didnt.
The years passed, and she developed an immunity of sorts to his treatment of her. She stopped letting herself feel what happening, being thrown around like a rag doll in his lust for her pain. But she couldn’t bring herself to care anymore. The only thing she could care about was school, knowing that if her grades slipped things would get worse for everyone around her.
School was her safe place. She had friends there, people that could make her steady. People that made her feel something. She clung to that, and them with a grip stronger than death. They noticed she needed them and gave her their all.
Sango and Miroku were the first. In 6th grade they had approached her as a pair, seeing as she was the only one without someone to talk to in their first class. She noticed they were very close, and shied away from them for weeks before finally deciding to try out friendship. They were kind and always supported her as she needed it.
As the years progressed, now in eighth, they introduced her to Inuyasha and Kikyou. Both had been wary of her at first, before they realized she was fine and held no ill intent. The dog-hanyou could sometimes pick up the scent of her bruises, and once he mentioned them she spent hours honing her power. She then went to school with her aura wrapped tight around her, holding in her scent. He never spoke of it again.
When they finally made it to high school, she met Sesshoumaru. Inuyasha had reluctantly introduced them all to his half brother, but he would never regret doing so. The hanyou had never seen his aniki actually tolerate the company of others until he had met his group of friends. So they all welcomed him into their group with open arms.

Thats how they got here, sophomore year sitting at the lunch table wondering where Kagome was.
”She‘s never missed a day in all the time we’ve known her,“ Sango said, glancing at the rest of them. “She’s always here, even when she’s sick.” Miroku nodded his agreement.
Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru had stayed silent as their human companions wondered over where Kagome might be.
“Ya know,” The dog eared hanyou spoke up, “I haven’t even smelt her in years. The last time I caught her scent was eighth grade.”
All eyes turned to him in that moment, as the gears in their brains worked rapidly. Miroku was the first to voice his thoughts.
“My friend, is it possible you said somethbig negative regarding her scent? You know she goes out of her way to try to keep everyone happy.” Inuyasha shook his head. He knew he had a problem of opening his mouth before thinking, but Kagome had a pleasant scent, even if it was marred by bruises.
Bruises!
“That’s it!“ He exclaimed standing up. Everybody in their group watched as he began to walk around the table. “I told her I could smell bruises on her, and after that I could never smell her.” Theirs eyes widened as the gears stopped momentarily. This information could mean a plethora of things.
”But why would she hide her scent just over a couple of bruises? It would’ve gone away soon enough, right?” Kikyou piped in. Inuyasha nodded, making white hair bounce slightly.
They all sat around, stumped at the mystery of Kagome‘s absence. Well all except one.
Sesshoumaru’s mind was spinning trying to put pieces together. Just what are you hiding Higurashi?
