Wicked Desires by yukihime

So, here's my view on how they "get together" and, wow, I honestly didn't think it'd be that long.  Please keep in mind that this has not been beta-read so I'm sure there are plenty of errors. Enjoy.

An echoing scream pierced the sky, drawing everyone’s attention.  Eyes looked to see Kagome being thrown through the canopy of trees.  The sound of breaking branches and violent rustling leaves rang through the forest.  Inuyasha and Kirara jumped into action but were caught by the tentacled monster.  Sesshoumaru managed to slip through, not casting a backward glance.  She had a fair led on him and he had to change trajectory if he was to catch her.  Without hesitation, he shot forth, managing to overtake her.  They cleared the edge of the woods and landed in the low hills where the landscape was spotted with clusters of seedlings.

Sesshoumaru had shielded her from the impact and most of the damage but Kagome was still covered in scratches and markings that were starting to turn blue.  She hissed when he shifted away from her to see the damage.  “Be still,” he instructed, looking to ensure no limbs were broken.  Her eyes focused on him, trying to block out the pain.  He moved to cup her chin, checking her vision.  She seemed to respond as quick as a human could be expected to.  “Think you can move?” he finally asked.

Kagome nodded so Sesshoumaru stood, extending a hand to help the woman onto her feet.  He slowly pulled her up and she managed a step before her knees buckled under her weight.  “Oh,” she exclaimed as he caught her.

Sesshoumaru steaded her.  “Be careful.”  He looked around, noting their surroundings as she clung to him. “We need to get out of the open.”  Kagome nodded, it wasn’t safe especially in unfamiliar territory and she wasn’t currently in shape to escape or assist.  He put an arm around her and swiftly moved them to a nearby group of trees.

His light grunt alarmed Kagome and she let go to look him over.  “What’s wrong?”  He shrugged her off as he stood upright.  It was not the time to alarm her.  Kagome moved to touch his arms before her hands shifted to his sides.  He grunted when fingers crossed his lower ribs.  “Did you get hurt in the fall?” she asked him with concern in her eyes.

“I’ll be fine.  We need to keep moving,” he told her as he wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her close.  If he were to fall, he wanted to shield her from the impact.  Before Kagome could protest they had shifted to another clove of oaks.  Sesshoumaru stilled as the smell of nearby demons filled his nostrils.  “We are not alone,” he warned as he paused, looking for the source.  Sharp eyes spotted moving figures along the ridge to their right.

He signaled toward them and she searched for what alerted him.  She shook her head to indicate that she couldn’t see what he had.  “Could Naraku have sent them?” she asked with concern in her voice.

“It is too soon.”  The figures began their descent and he shifted to place his body between the unknown danger and Kagome.  “Stay quiet and do not make any unnecessary moves.”  She nodded as they came into her view.  They were about Shippo’s size and just as furry.  The group of six looked to be a mixture of male and female with varying coats of color.  Their ears drooped past the chin and they held light markings under the eyes.  Kagome didn’t sense that they were threatening or dangerous but she kept her guard up as the group drew near.  She could feel Sesshoumaru tense before one spoke.

“We saw you fall out of the sky.  Do you need help?” the voice asked.  It was hard to distinguish the gender from the chirping tone.  He had passing encounters with hare demons but had never stumbled into their home.  Sesshoumaru was not sure how to gauge their reaction to the outside presence and what trouble might come their way.  There was a long stretch of silence before it spoke again.  “At least let us check the human.  She is more fragile.”  Sesshoumaru agreed with his statement and nodded.  “Follow us.  The healer is this direction.”

He didn’t sense any ill intentions but kept Kagome close as they followed the small pack.  She held onto him and the two surveyed the area as they moved up the ridge.  Once they reached the peak, the band descended into the valley.  Along the right, small homes spotted the landscape.  Kagome estimated that about two dozen families resided in the village.  Though they were demons, the beings were friendly and it seemed like a pleasant place to live.  She glanced to gauge Sesshoumaru’s reaction before her head began to spin.  Kagome opened her mouth to speak and managed to utter a syllable, catching his attention, as she passed out.  Sesshoumaru scooped her up and turned to the one who had spoken earlier.  “How much farther?”

He pointed to a trio of tiny buildings.  Clusters of trees sat on either side, giving it some security from unwanted visitors.  “He’s in there.  If you take her to the back, you’ll see a cave that you can use.  We’ll get him for you,” he explained as they hurried into the larger house.  Sesshoumaru moved around the buildings and, when he rounded the grouping of trees, saw what the demon had been referring to.  About twenty feet up, they had molded and carved an unnatural cavern into the land.  He walked toward the entrance, careful to inspect the area, ensuring there were no hidden traps.  Once inside, Sesshoumaru scrutinised the large room.  The bed was a thicket of leaves and the only furniture was a table sized for the hare demons.  The sound of feet caused him to pivot on his heel, turning to see two villagers approaching.  Sesshoumaru recognized the one he conversed and assumed the other was their healer.  “I’ve brought him.  These are the people I was telling you about,” he explained.

The other hare demon seemed older.  His brown coat was greying and he walked slower than the others.  He held a limb out to silence the younger demon.  “Quiet, Taki.”  He moved to stand near the couple.  “My name is Daegyn.  I’m the healer in this village.  If you want me to see her, you’ll need to put her down,” he gently explained as he pointed to the bedding.  “I have some experience in dealing with humans.”

Sesshoumaru nodded and laid her on the mat but hovered to keep a close eye on her.  He wanted to ensure that no harm would come to her under his care.  He had never witnessed such a skilled demon hand examine a human before.  If his charge ever fell ill, Sesshoumaru always took Rin to the nearby human village to be seen.  She seemed to feel safe under the female she saw.  He wondered how Kagome would feel and if he were allowing something she might disapprove of.  Although Sesshoumaru did not see her being upset, it was still a possibility.

Daegyn pulled scrap papers and a pen out to begin writing.  When he finally turned, he motioned Taki over.  “I need you to give this to Naoko and stay at the house.”  He nodded but looked disappointed as he left.  Daegyn faced Sesshoumaru.  “She’s been poisoned but I already have everything.  I just need to mix the elixir.  She has a few nasty cuts so we can put an ointment to help them heal faster.”  Sesshoumaru nodded.  It was a relief to have the situation quickly resolved.  They needed to be getting back to the group before his brother worked himself up.  “The only problem is she will need to rest for several hours after ingesting the tonic so you will not be able to travel until sunrise.”

Sesshoumaru nodded.  Of course it wouldn’t be that easy.  “You can guarantee this will work?” he inquired as a female, who he presumed was Naoko, entered.  She was maybe two feet in height, a little shorter than Daegyn, with a mustard coat, and she carried a basket, to her size, full of bottles and herbs.  She moved to the table past him and began unloading items.

“I can, Lord Sesshoumaru,” he replied.  The taller demon nodded in response before Daegyn turned to face the table of ingredients.  Golden eyes watched hands measure, grind, and mix for several minutes then pour the blue concoction into a small cup.  The hare demon spun to face him.  “She needs to drink all of this,” he explained as he handed the elixir off.

Sesshoumaru nodded his understanding as he moved to sit next to Kagome.  He lifted her head, tilted her mouth open then dripped a little in but she didn’t swallow.  Without hesitation, he put the cup to his mouth and tipped the contents in before leaning down and transferring the liquid past her lips.  His tongue danced with hers as she swallowed in reaction.  Sesshoumaru pulled away, satisfied that she had gotten enough of the medicine.  He turned to spit what was left out but his broken rib moved painfully and he winced.

Daegyn quickly moved to him as Naoko gasped in surprise, she never thought he would be one to have a serious wound.  “Lord Sesshoumaru, let me look at you,” he gently ordered.  The man pulled his robes down to reveal violent bruising along his left side.  “It looks broken.  I’ve got an ointment then we need to wrap it.”  Daegyn walked back to the table and picked up a small jar of green salve.  “Naoko, grab the other bottle of ethomax for the human.  I don’t want to worry about not having enough,” he explained as he sent her off.  The two watched her walk out of sight before Daegyn faced Sesshoumaru.  He began to gently apply the medicine, being careful as he neared the broken bone.  When he finished, he wrapped the lord with clean bandages Daegyn pulled from a basket hidden near them.  “You’ll need to change these every morning and night.”  He tucked the edge, finishing when Naoko entered.

Sesshoumaru pulled his clothing up.  “Thank you, Daegyn.  I am indebted to you and will not forget it.”  He watched as Naoko moved to Kagome and stood.  “Shall we move outside?” he suggested before the small demon could undress her.  Daegyn nodded and the two walked outside and out of view of the women.  Sesshoumaru could feel that the salve was potent, coupled with his healing, he estimated that it would be three to five days before he was fully healed.  “I want to compensate you,” he told him as they slowed to a stop.

“Thank you, Lord Sesshoumaru,” Daegyn replied, “but I didn’t help because I expect money.  We’re a small and self-sufficient village.  We help those in need and hope that others would do the same.  That’s all we ask.”  He nodded as he turned to gaze over the valley.  He had lived here his whole life, and expected to die here.  He loved the people and the land.  It was his home.

“I respect that but it is my wish to repay you for your help,” Sesshoumaru explained.  He did not want to walk away without paying his debt.  He glanced back toward the cave, ensuring they were not being overheard.  “You are an excellent healer.  Surely there is something that might help you save lives.”  He decided to try a different angle.

Daegyn nodded at his words.  There was something that would be beneficial.  He turned to him.  “If possible, I would like protection for my village.”  He thought it might be too much of a request and shifted to meet his face.  Daegyn opened his mouth to speak but Sesshoumaru cut him off.

“I believe that may be arranged.  It seems like you are not that far from the edge of my territory  If you are unwilling to relocate about twenty miles south,” he turned and pointed the direction he was referring to, “then I may be able to work out something with the ruling lord in this area.”  He shifted to glance down at Daegyn.  “Talk it over with your people then send me your decision.”

He nodded.  “That is very generous, Lord Sesshoumaru.”  The demon acknowledge his words and pivoted to see children from the village running across the field.  Their laughter reached the ears of Naoko, who stepped out to notify the men that she had finished.  “Thank you, Naoko.  Will you start them up something to eat?  We will be compensated.”

Her eyes shifted to Sesshoumaru and he nodded in agreement before she smiled.  “Of course.  Is there anything special you’d like, or something I should not include?”

“Anything is fine.  You do not need to go to extra trouble for me,” he told her.  He could tell she was eager to please but he didn’t want that.  Naoko nodded and hurried off as the two men watched her disappeared into the back of the one of the smaller houses.  “I would like to regularly purchase that healing ointment you used,” Sesshoumaru spoke as he turned to Daegyn, inquiring about the salve.  He knew it would come in handy in their fights against Naraku and they needed every advantage they could get.

He nodded.  “I’m sending one with you for her but one of the ingredients can be hard to find.  It’s a rare flower that grows in the high mountains called bergenia.  It comes in pink and white clusters.  If you come across any, pick three bundles for a jar and I’ll make you one,” Daegyn explained as he shifted to look at the mouth of the cavern.

Sesshoumaru’s voice drew his attention back to the lord.  “I’ll be happy to gather all the ingredients for you.”  He was in need of something for Kagome.  A safety net would alleviate some of his concerns.  His brother was not as good a protector as he wanted to be.  Anything he could do to hurry that process was something he was prepared to do.

Daegyn shook his head and waved at him.  “I have the children for that.  Bergenia are too dangerous to send someone inexperienced from the village.”  He turned to watch the children play below.  “I want to protect the innocence that these children still have.”  Daegyn faced Sesshoumaru.  There was a seriousness that the demon had in his eyes.  “It’s what I wish for.”

Sesshoumaru nodded in understanding before he turned to ascend into the cave.  He wanted to check on Kagome’s status for himself.  He moved to kneel beside her, pulling a lock of hair from her face before checking her temperature.  She was cooling.  He shifted to sit across from her, keeping the entrance between them while able to see both.  Her breathing was steady and Sesshoumaru held out for her waking soon.  An hour passed before he heard footsteps and smelled food.  Daegyn popped his head up with a smile as he entered, carrying a larger basket.  “Naoko made you two a generous feast,” he replied as he sat it down on the table.  “I think she wanted to impress you,” he chuckled as he began placing items on the slab.

Sesshoumaru watched him pull out a half loaf of bread, a jar of red jam along with a small cauldron that was filled with hot soup.  It smelled delicious.  “She did not have to go to so much trouble,” he spoke as he watched Daegyn retrieve eating utensils for two.  Sesshoumaru spared a look at Kagome before he stood and moved the short distance to the food.

“I think Naoko was pleased she was asked to cook for you, Lord Sesshoumaru,” he replied as he ladled the steamy soup into two bowls.  Daegyn set the meal aside and cast a glance to the still sleeping female.  “What is her name?”  He had wanted to inquire earlier but was not sure how Sesshoumaru would respond.  Naoko’s insistence was the reason he finally posed the question.  The lord of the dog demons was not one to be known to associate with humans, and he had suspected that the rumor of Sesshoumaru traveling with a human child was just that - a rumor.  But when Taki came in shouting that Lord Sesshoumaru was here, injured, and with a female human, he wasn’t sure what to believe.

He reached for one of the bowls.  “Kagome, and I’m sure that she will be grateful for the hot food when she wakes, as I am.”  Daegyn watched him return to his seated position against the wall and eat.  He was about to inquire about the human when she stirred, drawing the attention of the two.  Sesshoumaru stopped as she shifted.

Kagome groaned and opened her eyes, focusing on the ceiling of mud before she attempted to move upright.  She winced in pain and Daegyn sat next to her.  “You should not move yet,” he explained as he tried to help her sit up.  She gently touched her left side and took a deep breathe when her fingers found the wound.  “You have a nasty gash so you need to be careful.  It’ll take several days to fully heal but you will be fine.  You just need to take it easy for a while.”

Kagome nodded at the small demon with a smile.  “Thank you for helping us,” she told him as she swung her feet onto the ground, holding the grunt in.  She glanced at Sesshoumaru sitting across from her before she met the hare demon’s eyes.  “We’re very grateful for your assistance, sir--?” she spoke, letting her words fall off.

“The name is Daegyn, and it was my pleasure, Kagome,” he replied with a smile.  She faltered when she heard her name.  She looked at Sesshoumaru, who was staring at her, and blushed.  He rarely made eye contact.  When his golden gaze was trained on her, her heart skipped a beat.  He must have told him her name and she wondered what it sounded like from his lips.  Daegyn noted the silent conversation between them and cleared his throat before he broke the quiet.  Sesshoumaru looked away to continue eating.  “There is warm food if you are hungry.  You need to eat to build your strength,” he told her, bringing the bowl and bread.

Kagome took the food.  “Thank you very much, Daegyn.”  She ate in silence, not sparing Sesshoumaru a glance.  It was hard to say what he was thinking.  She couldn’t even begin to guess.  Kagome assumed that Inuyasha wasn’t able to get past the demon that Naraku had sent.  Sesshoumaru must have had the advantage of their distraction and slipped through.  Kagome had mixed feelings about his kindness but was more grateful to be alive and decided that nothing else needed to be given her attention or thought.  They had been lucky to stumble across such well-meaning demons.  She finished her food quickly and returned the bowl to Daegyn as she nibbled on the jam covered bread.  “That was truly delicious.  Thank you for such a wonderful meal,” she told him with genuine affection.

“I’ll send your compliments to the cook.  Naoko will certainly be happy to hear them,” he smiled.  He turned to Sesshoumaru retrieved his dish.  “You are welcome to stay here for as long as you wish.  If there is anything you need, please don’t hesitate to let me know.  I will help you as much as I can.”  Daegyn loaded his basket, bowed, and walked out of their sight.  He was certain that girl was the reason Sesshoumaru had a broken rib.  It seemed obvious to him there was more between the two than they wanted others to know.

Kagome watched Daegyn’s head disappear, trying to steady herself.  Sesshoumaru was hard to read so she could never be sure what he might do, though she never truly feared for her life after he joined their fight against Naraku.  She turned to see him staring at her again.  “What do you remember?” he gently spoke.  He did not want to push her but it was clear Kagome had been the target.  They had assumed that Naraku wanted her alive but it looked like that might not be the case.  It was something that had to be investigated.  If he now saw her as a serious threat, they needed to know why and what he had learned.

Kagome cast her eyes down and to the left, recalling what happened before she was hit.  The demon had an almost liquid state, transforming it’s limbs when it faced different opponents.  “I notched an arrow and hit it between the shoulders.  It must have caught it’s attention because the arm swatted me away.”  She folded her hands and looked at the demon sitting across from her.  “Thank you for saving me.  If you hadn’t caught me, or took that landing, I’d be dead.”  He nodded at her apology.  “How are you doing?  I know you broke at least one rib.”  She had noticed that he wasn’t moving from his seat.

“I will live,” he told her.  “So you do not remember more about the demon?”  Kagome shook her head.  “Very well.”  Sesshoumaru stood and she couldn’t tell he had been wounded from the fluidity of his motions.  He moved in front of her, pulling the shikon shards from his sleeve.  “I can not be sure all the villagers are trustworthy but these belong to you.”  He dropped the glass jar into her hands, watching a small smile cross her lips.  “It looked like you were the target and Naraku may be trying to kill you,” he told her though he was sure she had come to that conclusion herself.

Kagome nodded.  “He may have found a way to make the Shikon whole without a priestess.”  The thought had crossed her mind before.  Though Kikyou had shown her a prayer to combine the shards, Kaede had told her of other ways - ways that would do more damage and taint the jewel beyond cleansing.  She had to do everything she could to keep that from happening.  Her head began to throb and fingers went to her temples.  Kagome leaned forward, resting her forehead against Sesshoumaru’s leg.  “My head,” she groaned as it intensified.  She couldn’t think.

Sesshoumaru kneeled and placed his hands over hers.  Her heart rate had increased.  It seemed she was having a reaction to something.  He could not be sure if it was the medicine or food.  “I will be right back,” he told her before bolting out the cave and to Daegyn’s house.  Within two minutes, he was back with the hare demon.  “It just began,” she heard him say.

Daegyn quickly moved to Kagome and could see what Sesshoumaru had said to be true.  “It has to be the medicine.  A slim amount of the human populace is allergic to winter ivy but that can be rectified using some windroot and blackweed.”  As soon as the words were out of his mouth, Sesshoumaru disappeared and was back in less than a minute with the necessary tools the healer would need.  He didn’t waste any time and went to work, giving orders as he mixed and measured.  “She needs to lay down and open her top,” he explained as he ground the ingredients.

Sesshoumaru did not hesitate to follow orders.  He helped her down and sat next to her before untying the red sash, opening the garment to reveal the top of her breasts.  He glanced up to see her eyes shut and brows furrowed in pain.  Kagome was still rubbing her temples when Daegyn appeared beside him.  “She has to drink this.  It’s potent but will work immediately,” he explained as he handed it off.  Sesshoumaru held the liquid to her lips as his other hand cupped the back of her neck.  She managed to keep the concoction down but coughed from the bittersweet taste.

Naoko hurried in with a steaming cloth soaked in what Sesshoumaru assumed, from the smell, was a mixture of lavender and fernlove blueberry.  He laid her back down as she moved between them, laying the fabric on her chest.  Sesshoumaru watched the pain her face fade.  “My headache is gone,” she told them as she opened her eyes.  “The medicine tasted awful but seemed to have worked.”  She glanced over to Daegyn.  “Thank you.”

Daegyn waved Naoko out before he spoke.  He didn’t want anyone else in the village is know more than they already did.  “Kagome, you need to lay down and be as still as possible for three hours.  The medicine will need to absorb the winter ivy in your system.  The lavender will help you relax.”  Daegyn turned to Sesshoumaru.  “Can I speak with you for a moment?”  He looked to Kagome who nodded before he turned to the man and followed him outside.  Once they were out of earshot, Daegyn spoke.  “You need to keep a close eye on her.  As long as she is still, the medicine will work.”

Sesshoumaru caught his wording.  “If she moves around too much?”  He needed clear information and wanted the truth.  If Kagome’s life was in danger, it was something that he should know.  He had to protect her.

“Then we’ll have to start the process over again.  If her system absorbs too much of the winter ivy, she could die and there’s no telling what that threshold is,” he glanced toward the mouth of the cavern.  “There’s a hot spring about three hundred feet northeast of here.  After the three hours, take her there and let her sit in the steam for 30 minutes.  She’ll need to sweat out what was absorbed into her skin and wash herself but a bath should make her feel better.”  He let out a sigh.  “She should be fine as long as we keep a close eye on her.”

Sesshoumaru acknowledged his understanding of medicine but still had a lingering concern.  “What required the fernlove blueberry?”  He knew that was used as an intoxicate.  How it would effect Kagome was not something he wanted to know.

“The windroot and blackweed won’t be enough to dispel the winter ivy.  Fernlove blueberry can also draw out the poison,” he explained.  “I know that it can be used in other means but small doses don’t have an effect such as that.  Plus she didn’t ingest it which is where the potency of the plant really comes from.”  Sesshoumaru nodded but the look of relief he expected was not there.  Daegyn wondered what the relationship was between the two and whether the lord had come to the conclusion he had.

Sesshoumaru bowed his head then pivoted on his heels toward the cave.  He needed to keep an eye on her and the time.  When he entered, Kagome was laying on the bed, staring at the ceiling.  She seemed to be lost in thought and he did not want to disturb her.  He moved to his station and glanced over when he heard her shift.  She was on her side and fixed her gaze on him.  The material had fallen off and he could see part of her chest.  He held her eyes before he spoke.  “Is there something you want to ask me?” Sesshoumaru spoke as he stood and moved to sit next to her.  He gently laid her back down, placing the cloth on her chest.  “You have to be still for a while,” he repeated Daegyn’s orders.

“I heard him.  For three hours.  I’m not antsy,” she explained, “I just feel a little queasy and didn’t want to be sick on the bed.”  Sesshoumaru touched her forehead but she did not feel warm, which was a relief.  Kagome tried to not lean into the warmth of his hand as she closed her eyes.  When he pulled away, she opened them to see him watching her.  “I’m just a little confused from everything, I guess,” she told him, trying to laugh it off.

“Try to get some rest.  You’ll be able to take a bath soon,” he told her.  She nodded and watched him move away.  Kagome missed his heat and averted her eyes to the ceiling.  Holding the jar of shards helped calm her emotions.  She wasn’t completely sure why she was so emotional.  Kagome chalked it up to a combination of events, though almost dying was definitely at the top of the list.  She had come close before but had never been on Death’s doorstep.

Sesshoumaru returned to his seat and set his gaze on the entrance.  He wanted to be able to give her privacy but with the current situation, that was not an option.  It was obvious she was upset but he could not begin to guess what had triggered it.  There was a number of things that was within the realm of possibility.  He could tell that she had wanted to say something but was not sure what held her back.  Within a short period, he heard Kagome lightly snorting and checked the time.  They had another two hours before she needed to be taken to the hot spring.

Daegyn showed just before the clock was about to expire with a basket and cloth.  He set down the load and moved to check Kagome.  The demon picked up her hand and placed his fingers over the inside of her wrist.  “She’s doing well,” he told Sesshoumaru as he laid Kagome’s arm back down.  “I brought bathing soaps for her and something to wrap herself in after.  She’ll need new clothes but we don’t have anything for her here.  There’s a few villages to the north and east.  You might be able to find something for her.”  Sesshoumaru nodded in agreement.  It was be more efficient to search nearby for appropriate clothing.  “I brought something for her while she baths,” he told him, patting the side of the basket.  “It’s almond milk and fairymoss to help her regain strength.  She should drink it all.”

“We are grateful for your help, Daegyn,” Sesshoumaru spoke as he stood.  “You have been a competent healer.  We were lucky to have found you.”  And he meant that.  Kagome would have been in serious trouble if she did not see a healer as soon as possible.  It was not something that Sesshoumaru wanted to think about.

He nodded at the lord’s words.  His praise meant something and had decided to persuade the others to move.  His protection would be guaranteed if they moved onto his lands.  “Naoko has asked several women in the village to help Kagome bathe.  If you would like to use that time to track down some clothing for her, then-” Daegyn began explaining before Sesshoumaru cut him off.

“No, I will not leave her side,” he spoke.  His tone expressed that the issue was closed to discussion.  It was the last thing he wanted or would do.  “Send one of the villagers out.  I have money to pay for the inconveniences and clothing.”  He pulled out a bag of coins and handed them over.  “Use what you need.”

Daegyn nodded but was surprised at the weight of the purse.  He put it away as he considered who he would send out.  It would have to be a female and she would need an escort.  It was another task but he filed it away.  He wanted to help.  “Very well, Lord Sesshoumaru.  I’ll tell Naoko your decision.  You may leave her clothing at the hot spring.  We’ll clean them and have them returned,” he told him.

Sesshoumaru nodded to him before he turned to leave then glanced at the basket and Kagome.  He needed to begin preparing for the hot springs.  He gathered the jar of salve and put it under the cloth in the basket before turning to the sleeping woman.  He moved to her and slipped his arms under her, lifting her to his chest.  She didn’t stir but nestled against him.  He stopped to pick up the basket then walked out and started in the direction Daegyn had indicated, northeast.  Sesshoumaru could smell the hot springs before they came into view.  He rounded a large cluster of brush, following the scent and steam that drifted with the breeze.  It was larger than he thought and stilled to ensure they were alone.  He could not be sure no one else knew of its location.  When Sesshoumaru knew the spring was deserted, he entered the natural alcove, and headed toward a clearing that was near the hot waters.  He sat down, putting the basket next to him and resting Kagome in his lap, shifting hair out of her face.  He brushed the back of his fingers against her cheek, rousing her.  She opened her eyes to see golden ones staring down at her.  “You need to bathe now,” he told her.  Kagome nodded and tried to move out of his arms but she couldn’t support herself.  She let out a pained gasp and Sesshoumaru gently laid a hand on her.  “Be still.  You will open your wounds,” he told her before he began to undress her.

Kagome tried to remember that he was only helping but knew her blushing was giving away her thoughts.  “I-I think I can do it,” she stammered as she attempted to take over.  Sesshoumaru wouldn’t let her and she didn’t have the strength to argue with him.  Kagome chanced a glance at the demon lord only to find he was still watching her.  She laughed nervously but had to look away.  It was hard to tell what he was thinking and she was sure it wasn’t what was running through her mind.  When he pulled the skirt off of her legs, Kagome couldn’t keep her silence.  She tried to wiggle onto the ground but he grunted at her movements and it took her a moment to realize what she had done.  Sesshoumaru tried to hold onto his patience as he ignored her unwitting challenge and pulled her top over her head.  Kagome let out a loud gasp and covered herself.  “I can finish, Sesshoumaru,” she kept her eyes closed, refusing to look at him.

Sesshoumaru glared at her.  “This is not the time to be modest.  We need to get you into the waters,” he explained as he shifted to unclasp her bra.  The scars on her body was the only reminder he needed to forget how she felt under his touch.  It was life and death.

“No!  Really, please let me,” she begged as he tried to slip the garment from her grip.  Kagome wouldn’t have thought she’d ever find herself in a situation like this with Sesshoumaru.  He disregarded her objections and stood with her, moving to the water while keeping her in his arms.

“You can decide whether you prefer dry or wet undergarments,” he told her as he sat her down.  Kagome managed to keep herself upright as Sesshoumaru’s hands were at her waist, steadying the woman.  He did not give her time to reply as he hooked his thumbs into her panties and pulled them down.  Kagome couldn’t hold her shriek and tried to move into the warm cover, wanting to hide herself.  Sesshoumaru caught her by the shoulders, stilling her.  “You will fall if you run into the water like that.  You have my word that I will not look,” he said, trying to alleviate some of her embarrassment.  She nodded so he pulled the bra from her fingers and took a hand, helping her into the water as he cast his gaze elsewhere.  He could hear her as her body slipped into the hot spring.

“Thank you,” she told him as she glanced back, noting that he had kept his word.  She watched as he turned and moved toward a basket she had not noticed.  When he faced her, Sesshoumaru held a drink and kneeled down to her.

“You need to drink this.  It will help you regain some of your strength.”  When she hesitated, Sesshoumaru explained in more detail.  “It’s almond milk and fairymoss.  They are harmless.”  Kagome nodded and took the cup, taking a test sip as he walked away.  He returned with a bar of soap, laying it on a nearby stone then pivoted on his heel to face the other direction.  “This is the most privacy you will receive.”

She stared at his back and hid her smile.  “Very well.”  Kagome set her drink down and reached for the soap.  She quickly scrubbed her arms then turned and stood to wash her torso.  When she was finished, Kagome returned the soap and cleared her throat.  “I’m finished,” she announced.

Sesshoumaru turned and noted that the cup was not empty.  “You have finish the drink,” he told her as he took the soap.

“Oh,” she said, drinking the rest of the liquid.  “It was delicious.”  Kagome held the mug up for him to take.  He bent, looking at her as their fingers met when he collected it.  “You’ve gone to a lot of trouble to keep me alive.  I’m truly grateful,” she told him when he turned away.  She thought that it was more effort than she had given him credit for then immediately felt guilty for having the thought.

“It was nothing,” he told her, not wanting her to put more weight on it.  He was trying to not think too deeply about his reasons either.  “You need to soak longer,” he spoke, changing the subject as he looked to the moon.  She watched him avoid her eyes, and realized he was trying to keep his promise.  Time seemed to pass slowly as the two let the silence linger between them.  When she had been in for half an hour, Sesshoumaru went to the basket and pulled the cloth out.  He moved to stand a few feet away from the edge of the water, averting his eyes.

Kagome carefully climbed out of the water and stepped into the waiting cover.  She took the edges, wrapping them around her, and stepped away.  When she turned to face Sesshoumaru, he was watching her.  “Thank you,” she told him, holding his gaze.

He nodded.  “Daegyn will have your clothing cleaned.”  Sesshoumaru turned to the basket, picking it up before he stopped in front of her.  “We need to return and treat your wounds,” he explained as he wrapped an arm around her, pulling her close.  Before Kagome knew, they were floating in the sky.  When they returned to the cave, it seemed that whoever Daegyn had sent out for clothing had been successful.  A simple yukata had been set on the bed for Kagome along with another basket of food.  Once they were safely inside, Sesshoumaru released her, making sure she had her footing before letting go.  He placed the basket on the table and began pulling items out.  Kagome watched him lay her undergarments down.  Her face turned a bright red as she quickly moved to his side, snatching them from his view.  He didn’t cast a glance toward her as he set the salve out.  “Do you need help with the medicine?” he asked, not looking at her.

Kagome shook her head then realized he hadn’t seen and replied.  “No, I should be okay.”  She clutched her bra and panties as he turned away from her, walking to the entrance and out of her view.  She stood there for a few minutes, waiting to make sure Sesshoumaru wasn’t going to return before she began dressing.  Kagome quickly slipped on her underwear, latched her bra, salved her wounds, then turned to grab the simple yukata.  The pink and blue flower pattern with the red obi was quaint and reminded her of her grandmother.  A bittersweet smile crossed her features.  She shoved the memories aside and finished her task.  They had even provided her shoes but before she could slip her feet into them, Sesshoumaru appeared at the mouth of the cavern and cleared his throat, drawing Kagome’s attention.  She turned and saw him watching her again.  It was a hobby that he had seemed to have picked up since their time together.  She had noticed glances before but now that there was blatant staring, Kagome wasn’t sure what to make of it.  If he had questions then he would have already asked them.  “Would you like to eat?” she asked, avoiding the subject because it made her more uncomfortable than she wanted to admit.

Sesshoumaru stepped inside, admiring how the peasant garb he was accustomed to brought out a side of Kagome he had not seen before.  Her waist was more pronounced and her bust was emphasized.  It made her seem more delicate than he knew her to be and was a powerful illusion.  He could tell that she was trying to avoid making too much eye contact and it irritated him in a way that he did not understand.  As Kagome pulled food from the basket, Sesshoumaru moved to stand behind her.  “You should be resting,” he told her, laying his hands over hers to still her.  He felt her tense.  “You are still healing.”  He could smell the soap on her skin.

Kagome could feel his breath on her ear.  She turned her head so that she could see him from the corner of her eye.  “Okay,” she replied and stepped aside, slipping from his touch.  Sesshoumaru had never acted in such a forward way and she was beginning to wonder if he had hit his head when they landed.  She moved to the bed and sat down, watching him finish prepping the food.  He dipped out a full bowl of soup and handed it to her.  “Thank you,” she told him as their eyes connected.  He nodded at her and moved to his previous position against the wall.

The duo sat, silently eating the food, as the night sounds filled the air.  Sesshoumaru paused and sat up when his ears caught footsteps ascending the stone stairway.  Kagome had noted the change in him and held her breathe.  Daegyn’s head appeared and he shifted back, letting his companion know that there was no threat.  “It’s good to see you up and eating,” he spoke when he entered into her ear range.  The small demon made his way to Kagome and held out his hand.  “May I?” he inquired, signaling to her wrist.

“Oh, of course,” she replied and held out her hand.  He placed his hand over her pulse and checked her heart rate.  Sesshoumaru watched the encounter over the rim of his bowl.  He wanted to hear she had a clean bill of health.  They needed to return to the group before he spent any more time with the priestess.  Her honest yet bewitching nature was an enigma he found impossible to simply ignore.

“May I see the wound on your side?” he asked, pointing to the largest gash she had received.  Kagome nodded, untying the obi and loosening the fabric so he could examine her without a complete disrobing.  She intentionally avoided glancing at Sesshoumaru.  Kagome didn’t want to think that he had more than a passing interest.  “You covered it well, and it’s healing better than I thought.  You should be back to full health by the end of next week.”  Daegyn stepped back, letting Kagome redress herself.  “I recommend a full night’s rest before travel.  Just to be safe.  There’s still a possibility that you could easily open the wound,” he explained when she looked dispirited.

Kagome nodded and relinquished hopes for a speedy departure.  “I understand.”  She looked to see what Sesshoumaru might say but he held his silence.  His mask was perfect.  She glanced back to see Daegyn softly smiling at her.  “Thank you for your help.  I didn’t mean to seem ungrateful,” she tried to explain.  Kagome didn’t intend to give an impression like that and wasn’t wanting to cause any unknown embarrassment to Sesshoumaru.

He patted her knee and laughed.  “All is well, my dear,” he told her.  Daegyn turned to Sesshoumaru and signaled the lord outside.  He stood and followed the hare.  When they were alone, he turned to face him.  “The poisons that were in her system have been dissipated so she is in the clear.  The worst wound is healing quiet well.  After a night’s rest, she will be able to travel without too much worry over the injury.  I would give it another week before she sees combat.  Any blow to her torso will reopen the healed skin,” he emphasized, wanting Sesshoumaru to grasp how serious it could be.

“I understand,” he replied and nodded.  “Thank you for your generous hospitality.”  It had been a close call and keeping Kagome from any altercation would be a difficult task.  His options were limited.  He could only ensure her safety if she were within his castle walls.

Before he could turn, Daegyn caught his attention.  “Lord Sesshoumaru, I spoke to some of the elders in the village.  They are willing to consider moving if we are able to see the land you wish us to live on.  We’re need fertile land.”  He knew there would not be a good time to rely the information yet was afraid to pass the opportunity up.  The elders were the only ones that had worried Daegyn.  They had the longest connection to the land and could sway the youth that might object to the move.  When they were eager to live under the lord’s protection, they were willing to make the journey, granted they could see the land.  It was important for them to know whether the land was fruitful.

Sesshoumaru could guess their reasons but they were not unjustified.  “Very well.  Once I have settled Kagome, I will send for your village.  Prepare your belongings.  If it is something that is acceptable, then you may stay and we can begin building to your specifications.”  He watched the hare bow and hurry off.  He estimated that they would be ready in three to four days.  It was working in his favor as he needed a healer like Daegyn under his care.  He would be a handy asset.  Sesshoumaru turned toward the cavern entrance.  He had yet to decide if telling Kagome the truth would benefit him but also knew that she would not be able to overpower him in her state.  He entered and saw her sitting in the same position.  “It is better to stay and ensure that you are well enough to travel than to chance death.”

Kagome looked up to meet his steady gaze as he stood in the cavern entrance.  “I know that,” she snapped.  His words irritated her.  She didn’t need him to be her keeper.  She was more than capable of taking care of herself.  She didn’t need him or Inuyasha.  And, although Kagome wanted to believe that lie she told herself, she knew, deep down, that it was just that - a lie.  She sighed and apologize.  “I’m sorry.  I’m just disappointed,” she tried to explain, not wanting to elaborate on him being part of that frustration.

“Then you may not like this news,” he stated, drawing her attention.  “It will be a week before you can fight again.”  He watched the confusion in her eyes before realization set in.  It was in that moment that he had made his decision to tell her what he had planned.  She was not in a position to argue or refuse and he had no other way to keep her safe.  “You will be staying at my fortress.  I can assure your recovery if you are in a secure shelter,” he clarified.

Kagome’s brows shot up and she was sure that he saw the clear surprise on her face.  It was definitely the last thing she thought she would hear out of his mouth.  It would be funny if it were any other time.  “I don’t think Inuyasha will agree to that,” she told him.  Kagome was being polite because they both knew he would shoot that idea down immediately.  The rivalry between them was endless.

“I would inform him after I have dropped you off,” he explained.  Kagome uttered an ‘oh’ as she realized he had given this some thought.  “I have some other business that I need to handle,” he continued, ignoring her comment.  Sesshoumaru wanted to coax Daegyn to the castle and do it quickly.  Once the healer was secured, they would have an advantage against Naraku in their future encounters.

“I can’t talk you out of this, can I?” she asked, not wavering under his golden eyes.  He had not moved from his position and it started to make her nervous.

Sesshoumaru had wanted a different solution but she was a valuable tool to find Naraku.  He needed her alive to kill the half-demon.  “No.  I have decided.”  His words were simple and unrelenting.  It was something that was clearly conveyed to the human.

“Very well.  You are the one that gets to deal with Inuyasha, after all.”  She laughed at the thought of how that conversation would go before Sesshoumaru’s glare caused her to cough in a poor attempt to hide her humor.  She had learned to laugh when she could.  “I don’t plan on fighting you, if that’s what you are worried about.”  She threw up her hands in a gesture toward him.  She moved to lay on the bed, rolling onto her side so that her back was facing him.  She didn’t want to see him because she couldn’t deal with her immediate future.  Kagome knew that Inuyasha would be furious that their hunt for more shards and Naraku would be put on hold for a week.  She let go of her anger and allowed sleep to overtake her.

Kagome woke to see Sesshoumaru over her, gently shaking her.  Light was illuminating the ceiling and she could guess that the sun had been up for a couple of hours.  It was more time than Inuyasha would have allowed and Kagome found his simple action spoke volumes about how he truly viewed her current situation.  “We have a long journey ahead of us,” he told her.  “Daegyn brought a hot breakfast,” he explained when she eyed the new basket.

She smiled at him.  “That sounds delicious,” she said when he moved away from her, sitting up as he pulled food out.  Biscuits and eggs were handed to her and she ate them quickly.  Sesshoumaru finished his when Daegyn appeared.  Kagome saw him and stood, bowing to the demon.  “Thank you.”  There was more that she had wanted to say but wasn’t sure how appropriate it would be so held her tongue.

He waved at her with a gentle smile.  “There’s no need for such formalities, my dear,” he told her as he moved closer.  “I was happy to help you two.”  He stopped between them.  “I wanted to wish you to a safe journey.”  He looked to Kagome who bowed again then to Sesshoumaru.

The demon nodded and stood, towering over the two.  “Thank you,” he spoke the words with such ease that Kagome couldn’t help but stare at him.  When Sesshoumaru caught her eyes, he held them until Daegyn cleared his throat drawing his attention.  It was clear now to the older demon that there was something between the two, although he couldn’t be entirely sure what it was.  He nodded and left the two alone.  Daegyn would see the lord soon.

When she was sure he was gone, Kagome gave Sesshoumaru a big smile as she walked to stand next to him.  “That was impressive,” she said.  A brow rose in question to her statement so she elaborated.  “Being gracious.  It looks good on you,” she explained, trying to not grin too much.

Sesshoumaru kept his glare steadied on her.  “I have expressed gratitude before,” he told her, irritated at her assumption of his lack of manners.  “You have been around my brother for far too long.”  Her poking was a signal that she was feeling better so he would endure the gentle prodding.

Kagome laughed and nodded.  “You’re probably right.  Inuyasha is a little frayed around the edges but he means well and has a genuine heart,” she stated.  It was how she viewed him.  Despite her witnessing how brutal he could be, Kagome chose to see the good in Inuyasha.  It was how she saw everyone, including the demon standing in front of her.

He questioned what her view of him was but dismissed the thought.  It was not necessary knowledge.  “Do you have everything?” he asked.  Kagome moved to pick up her bundled clothing.  She had safely tucked the shards into the folds of her yukata the day before.  Having them on her had become second-nature so that when they weren’t, Kagome felt as if a part of her was missing.  She often wondered if Kikyou had ever felt that way.  When she turned to Sesshoumaru, she nodded.  He quickly stepped to her, wrapping an arm around her hips before he lifted them off of the ground and out of their temporary shelter.

Kagome instinctively clutched at the fabric around Sesshoumaru’s waist.  She wasn’t accustomed to traveling in a manner like this.  She never thought she’d miss Inuyasha’s back.  It felt unsettling in a way she couldn’t describe.  Part of her wondered if it was who she was clinging to but decided that train of thought wouldn’t be helpful.  She tried to distract herself, opting to look at the passing scenery.  She could guess where they were when Kagome saw the river from this height.  She had memorized ancient maps and that knowledge came in handy more times than she would have liked to admit.  She also knew that Sesshoumaru’s castle was close and shifted her gaze, spotting it in the distance.  It was only mentioned on one map that dated before the 1500s and she always puzzled over its absence from others.  It was clearly still standing.

“You have a good memory,” he spoke, startling her.  She glanced up at him as they began a slow descent.  His gaze was steady, focusing on their landing.  Kagome could tell that he was aiming for the largest open area inside the tall stone walls.  When their feet touched down in the courtyard, Sesshoumaru released her as several demons emerged, causing Kagome to step behind him.  He shifted to take her wrist then started forward.  “Where is Kouta?” he demanded as he moved into the castle walls.

“He’s in the front hall, Lord Sesshoumaru,” a voice replied from the left.

The demon didn’t pause or acknowledge the comment as he continued down a hallway.  He was intent on getting her hidden away before her presence stirred any unwanted attention.  The only saving grace was that she was dressed as a peasant so one would assume he had found a new keeper for Rin instead of bringing his brother’s priestess into his home.  Kagome had to trot to keep up with his pace leaving her little time to admire the interior of his home.  They stilled long enough for him to open a set of double doors and lead her inside.  Sesshoumaru let go of her and turned to close them, leaving Kagome to wander into the interior.  She dropped her bundled clothes near the door as she stepped into the large open space.  Elegant paintings depicting various dog demons in the midst of battle hung the walls.  A collection of pillows was scattered about the floor.  The furniture was sparse but classic and simple for the time.  On her left sat two small tables against adjoining walls.  She turned to the right to see his bedding in a recessed part of the room and blushed when it dawned on her where she was.  Footsteps echoed behind her and Kagome pivoted to face him.  “So what now?” she asked as she folded her arms in front of her.  It was a little unnerving to be alone in his bedroom.

Sesshoumaru moved toward her causing Kagome to take several steps back.  Although they both knew that her defensive measure was pointless, he felt the need to reassure her.  “You will be able to safely recover here,” he told her as he passed by, ignoring the nervous expression in her eyes.  He disappeared behind a screen then emerged in a clean kimono.  Kagome watched him move around the room, not sure what she should do before he called to her.  She walked to stand near a sliding screen, several feet from the demon, wanting to keep her distance.  “The salve,” he stated as he held out the jar to her.  Kagome nodded as she took the medicine.  “It is all we have.”

She looked up to meet his eyes.  He was intently watching her.  “I understand.”  She needed to be frugal and conserve as much as possible.  It wasn’t hard to follow what he was implying.  The silence hung between them until a knock at the door made Kagome jump.  She didn’t see Sesshoumaru’s smirk as he turned to open the wooden slab.  It was obvious that the woman was anxious.  He had a good idea for the reason behind her jitters but chose to keep his silence.

Sesshoumaru opened the door to see Kouta standing on the other side.  The demon was six inches shorter than him and held the noble markings of his lineage.  He turned to Kagome.  “Do not leave this room under any circumstances,” he ordered before he closed the threshold behind him.  The dog demon, who Sesshoumaru considered his most loyal counselor, masked his surprise at the lord’s behavior.  He very rarely had humans in his presence, save for the child he rescued last year.  So to see a human woman in his company was an unusual sight.  When Sesshoumaru faced him, he pulled Kouta away from the doorway, wanting to speak in private.  “I have a hare village that I will be moving onto the northern lands.  I need them as close to the stronghold as possible.  Scout out the surrounding grounds for fertility and report possible sites.  I will choose a place.”

The older demon nodded.  “When should we expect them?” he inquired.  It wasn’t out of the ordinary for his lord to shelter other demons, especially if there was something favorable in it for him.  Though Kouta didn’t know the reason, an entire village meant that he had found something invaluable.

“Send an envoy about thirty miles north.  They should see the village in a valley of rolling hills outside of a forest.  There are about forty inhabitants,” he told him.  “We will show them the site then bring them here.  I will need to finalize the arrangements.”  Sesshoumaru expected them to be amenable.  He could meet their requirements and would be fair.  “I also need word sent to Inuyasha.  Inform him of our arrival,” he added, almost forgetting.  He needed to attend to the more important matter at hand before he could leave.  Ensuring Kagome made a full recovery was essential.  And he knew, despite the his brother’s barking, that Inuyasha would agree.

Kouta lingered for a moment.  He was torn between wanting to inquire about the female and unsure of his lord’s reaction.  In the end, he decided to take a chance.  “Is there anything that your guest needs?” he quietly inquired, making a point to be as vague as he could.  He was carefully watching him to be sure he was reading the situation correctly.

Sesshoumaru raised a brow at his words.  It would be naive of him to believe that word had not reached everyone’s ears.  He should be grateful that Kouta is discrete and willing to help keep her hidden.  He nodded, compiling a list in his head.  “Clothing, food, and fresh bandages,” he told him.  Kagome would need another bath to cleanse her wounds after the day’s travel.  The demon glanced toward his room, wondering if there was something he was overlooking.

Kouta could see the hesitation in Sesshoumaru’s eyes and spoke to ease his worry.  “I can have that within the hour.  If there is anything else, let me know, Sire,” he explained before he turned and walked away.  There was little his lord knew about the opposite sex and even less about humans in general.  He wanted Sesshoumaru to succeed where his father couldn’t.  Touga-ou no Negai couldn’t bring about an understanding between the humans and demons.  He died before building that bridge but there was a possibility that his sons could finish what he started. He would support him in any way he could.

Sesshoumaru watched Kouta walk away before he moved back into his bedroom.  He saw Kagome sitting across the entry on pillows.  She looked out of place in his room but he welcomed the distraction and moved toward her.  “You need to bath.  There is a hot spring through the sliding door.  I will have clean clothing for you,” he explained as he stood over her.

Kagome wanted to argue but knew that the fastest way to recovery was keeping the wound clean.  It was the main cause of death in this era.  “Okay,” she replied and tried to stand but winced.  Sesshoumaru held out his hand and she took it, helping her up.

He held her close, wrapping an arm around her waist.  Sesshoumaru had not realized that he missed her warmth.  He knew she had more sense than the average human.  It was a quality he admired and, on more than one occasion, wondered where her knowledge came from.  He pulled at the obi, letting it fall to the floor.  The robes shifted open, revealing her lacy white underwear.  He had never seen anything like them before and let his eyes linger.  Kagome tried to shift the cloth to cover herself but Sesshoumaru pushed it off of her.  He kneeled to eye-level of the wound, cutting the bandages to reveal the injury.  The skin was healing faster than he would have thought.  By tomorrow, it would be a raw pink.  “It looks good.”  He stood, meeting her eyes.  “Your skin is absorbing the medicine well,” he told her, ignoring the blush across her cheeks.  He moved to the door that lead outside and slid it open.  “I will be here,” he spoke, letting her know he would not be far.

Kagome nodded as she slowly walked past him, unsure of what he might do next.  But once she passed the threshold, he closed the wooden door, giving her privacy.  She looked around, noting that the area had been walled in with brush and trees lining the outside from prying eyes.  There was a towel and soap laid out near the water’s edge.  She let the yukata fall to the ground, unhooked her bra then slid her panties off, laying them on a high rock so they would stay dry before slipping into the steamy waters.  It was a relief to be able to soak.  Her wound stung but it wasn’t unbearable.  She found a smooth cropping and leaned against the rock, trying to not let her thoughts wander to Sesshoumaru.  He had stripped her down but barely touched her.  Yet she had seen him pause, and it made her heart skip a beat.

She sighed and moved to grab the soap, scrubbing herself while taking care about the healing cuts.  When she finished, she grabbed the towel, leaving the cleanser, and rose to wrap the long linen around her.  Kagome picked up her underwear and walked to the door.  Before she could knock, it opened.  Sesshoumaru stood on the other side.  She smiled then entered, realizing that he had heard her emerge from the water.  “Thank you,” she replied when he shut the gateway.  She turned to face him, noticing the food near the largest pillow.  “Where should I get dressed?” she asked as she meet his eyes.

He pointed to the screen near his bed.  “This should give you enough privacy.”  She nodded and walked past him.  Sesshoumaru watched her disappear before he moved to sit by the tray.  He was impressed with Kouta’s timing.  They had brought the food a few minutes before she emerged from the spring, ensuring that she was not seen by the young demon that had knocked on his door.

Kagome dropped her towel when she was sure Sesshoumaru couldn’t see her.  She quickly pulled on her underwear then latched the bra, turning to grab the jar of medicine from a table which sat against the wall.  She layered the ointment over the scar before wrapping her torso then grabbed the clean yukata.  The silky material was a higher quality than the cotton and she could tell from the intricate print that this was an expensive piece of clothing.  Kagome dressed and emerged from the screen to find Sesshoumaru lounging in the center of the room.  The food was beside him and, despite her nervous demeanor, she approached the seated figure.  “Something smells delicious,” she spoke, eyeing the tray as she plopped down next to it.  He stared at her then motioned for her to help herself.  He was not craving food at the moment.  “Thanks,” Kagome replied as she lifted the lid to one of the soup bowls.  The steamy smell of fish wafted out to meet her.  She carefully picked up the container and began sipping its contents.  The mixture of broth, greens onions, fish, and soba noodles was the perfect combination, exciting her tongue and encouraging her to drink more.  She finished the meal, setting the bowl back on the tray and noting that Sesshoumaru hadn’t touched his yet.  “Are you not going to eat?” she asked, chancing a glance at him.

“I am not hungry,” he replied, holding her gaze.  She had not noticed he had been watching her eat.  He could not look away.  The deep blue yukata had a pattern of green and pink flowers that seemed to perfectly match Kagome.

Her brows furrowed at his statement.  “I know you have to eat,” she spoke, lifting the lid to find the same soup in his bowl.  “It’s delicious.  Just try it,” she prompted.  Sesshoumaru didn’t move which caused Kagome to make another face.  “You were injured too.”  He kept his mask in place as she stared him down.  “Seriously,” she huffed at him and raised a brow.

Sesshoumaru relented, picking up the food and bringing it to his lips.  He held Kagome’s eyes as he drank from the container.  This was a common dish for him but the taste was vibrant in comparison to his usual meals.  When he sat the food down, she checked to see it was half empty.  “You are persistent,” he told her.

Kagome smiled at him and tried to hid her laughter as she shifted on the pillow.  “It’s one of my best qualities,” she boasted as he stared at her.  He grunted at her response as he watched her push the surrounding cushions away with her feet.  She leaned forward, placing her palms on the wooden floor to support her weight.  He could see the uneasiness on her face as she shifted toward him.  “What do you think the others are doing?” she softly asked.  It had weighted on her and she wanted to know if they had survived and were looking for them.  There was always a possibility that Naraku had gotten the upper hand.  It was troubling to not know what had happened.

“Worrying will not help,” he told but it did not seem to soothe her.  “I am sure they are well,” he replied, watching the anxiety on her features fade.  It was his honest opinion.  His brother always managed to get himself out of impossible situations, like being bound to a tree for fifty years.  Inuyasha’s luck was infinite.  The proof sat across from him.

“You’re probably right,” she sighed and smiled at him when their eyes met.  “I’m just anxious, I guess.”  She stretched her limbs and yawned.  It had been a long day and, though there was still light, Kagome found her body was exhausted from the endeavor.  She turned to him when she realized that he may have not sent word to his brother yet.  “Does Inuyasha know we’re here?”

Sesshoumaru nodded.  “I have sent word.  He should be here by tomorrow.”  It was an inevitability that he would have to face.  An unpleasant truth that she was not his and would never be.  Her concern for his brother was envious and Sesshoumaru found himself desiring that burden.  Yet, it was something he believed he would never have.  The love of another was not an object to be taken but earned and that seemed like an impossible task for a demon like him.  He pushed such thoughts away.  There were other issues that needed his attention.  Sesshoumaru tried to rrse and grunted at the pain in his side.

Kagome shifted onto her knees as she moved the tray from between them, taking its place.  She realized that she hadn’t been giving him that attention she thought he needed.  “Have you treated yourself since we’ve been here?” she inquired with concern on her face.  Her hands were raised as if she were about to examine him but thought better.  It was apparent that he was not very good at taking care of himself, much like Inuyasha.  Her eyes scanned his side then the room.

Sesshoumaru raised a brow at her words.  It was rare to have one worry over him and something he was not accustomed to having.  “No, I have not,” he replied as he watched her stand and disappear behind the changing screen.  It was not a life-threatening injury but he knew she would not understand.  Humans were fragile creatures and comprehending demon anatomy was beyond even their most skilled healers.

She emerged with the ointment, remaining bandages, and aged yukata she had worn earlier, returning to her seat beside to him.  Kagome sat the jar down and began ripping the fabric into strips.  “We’ll need to change your bandages,” she told him when he continued to watch her.  She didn’t glance up as she proceeded to tear more cloth.  Kagome couldn’t believe that she had forgotten about Sesshoumaru’s wound.  Although he hid the pain well, it wasn’t an excuse.  She felt it was her duty to be attentive and took it seriously.  When she finished, she looked up to see him watching her.  “Take off your clothes,” she spoke sternly, trying to not give her words too much thought.

He raised a brow at her authoritative tone but moved to untie the sash at his waist.  The obi fell in his lap and Sesshoumaru shifted forward as he pulled the kimono off of his shoulders, revealing a toned and sculpted torso.  Kagome tried to not stare but was failing miserably.  Rather, the woman attempted to concentrate on the bandages that were around him.  She took a deep breathe then used her fingers to untie the wrapping.  She brushed against him as she took the dressing off.  Sesshoumaru could feel her warm breath as she leaned forward to loosen the cloth.  He could smell the soap she had used and the scent of cherry blossoms that lingered in her hair before she pulled away.  He could feel the cool air against his exposed skin and caught the scowl that crossed her features.  He glanced down to see a large blue and purple bruise across the rib that had broken.  It looked worse than it was.

Kagome grabbed the medicine and gently lathered it onto the blackened skin.  It was a stark contrast to his milky white flesh.  She understood the coloring meant the wound was healing but it still made her cringe.  She began wrapping the clean bandages around him before switching to the torn fabric.  “That should help,” she spoke as she shifted away from him.  Kagome looked away as he pulled his clothing on, retying the front of his kimono.

“Thank you,” he replied.  Though it was not necessary for her to change his wound, Sesshoumaru saw no need to stop her.  He could understand her need to control what was within her grasp.  It was something he had struggled with.  It had taken him a long time to understand why his father had left him Tenseiga instead of Tessaiga.  He had grown past his bitterness and the jealousy he held toward his half brother.

“You’re welcome,” she said with a smile, keeping her eyes averted.  Kagome wasn’t sure she could face him without picturing him topless.  She vowed to not be awkward around him.  Inuyasha would pick up on it immediately and wouldn’t drop the subject until he knew what happened and she wasn’t sure how he would act.  “So what’s the plan?” she asked, gathering her courage to meet his gaze.

“I have to attend to a task here.  Once you are well enough to travel, you may join Inuyasha and the others,” he explained.  He did not want there to be any confusion as to what her situation was.  Daegyn had been very clear about Kagome’s health and Sesshoumaru intended to follow the hare’s suggestions.

She nodded but let out a small laugh.  “I meant now,” she told him and held up a hand to emphasize her question, using her index finger to point to the floor indicating the present.  She wanted to know what Sesshoumaru’s plan was for her extended stay under his roof.  She would feel better if she knew where she fit in.

He signaled to the bedding behind her.  “You will sleep here.  I can guarantee your safety until you leave the Western Lands,” he stated as he watched her face reddened.  It was clear that his words had affected her.  Sesshoumaru had little control over how the human would feel by the confinement but had explained the situation and thought she understood.

Kagome shook her head, not quite comprehending what he was saying.  “Isn’t this your room?” she asked, trying to grasp the situation.  He nodded yes and her brows rose.  “Where are you sleeping?” she inquired, more confused by his answer.  She hadn’t seen another bed and the pillows wouldn’t be ideal for rest.

“I do not need as much sleep as humans,” he clarified.  It was one of the many advantages which made demons the superior species.  Although Sesshoumaru was confident she held that knowledge, he could not be sure what other information the woman had gathered through her travels with his brother or interactions with other demons.  Their secrets were closely guarded and not something they wished to be shared with holy warriors.

Kagome figuratively put her foot down, shaking her head vigorously at him.  “No.  No, you’re not going to heal if you don’t rest.  Isn’t there another room I could use?” she appealed in earnest, hoping he would give her an answer that would mend her current problem.  Though she didn’t know Sesshoumaru well, she knew that staying the night in the same room as him was not the best idea.  And Kagome could only imagine how Inuyasha would react to the news.  They had to find an alternate solution.

“No,” he simply stated, instantly crushing her hopes.  He had shown unexpectedly and the rooms needed a half-day to be ready.  Kagome needed to rest before then and he did not want her to push herself waiting for the room.

She let out a soft sigh and relented.  It was useless to argue with him.  If there was one thing Kagome knew about Sesshoumaru, it was that he was steadfast in his judgements.  “The bed is big enough for us both.  Just stay on your side,” she ordered, pointing at him.  It was her only choice.  She couldn’t, in good conscious, allow him to neglect himself after he had received the wound protecting her.  It didn’t matter how much moaning Inuyasha would cause.

“You need not worry about that,” he replied as he rose over her.  It was the last thing he expected to hear out of her mouth.  And he did not need her to tell him what to do.  Sesshoumaru could take care of himself and was offended that she thought otherwise.  Their gaze remained locked.  Kagome held her breathe.  He believed he caught a brief hint of fear before it passed.  “I will return.”  He spun and quickly moved through the threshold.

“Okay,” she said as she watched him leave.  Kagome thought it would be less awkward with him gone but she wasn’t sure what she would wake to.  And whether he would rest as she knew Daegyn had instructed.  She sighed and stood, moving to the bed and climbing in.  She was exhausted and welcomed the solitude.  She didn’t want to think anymore.

Several hours later, Sesshoumaru entered his room.  He could hear her light snoring and moved closer to see her laying on her back, one hand over herself.  She had taken the farthest side, leaving him free to come and go without disturbing her.  The demon commended that forethought as he laid down on the mattress intending to shut his eyes for a few hours.  The rest would speed his recovery and ensure his absence before Kagome’s awakening.  He glanced over to confirm she was still sleeping before he settled in, falling asleep.  When he opened his eyes, the warmth Sesshoumaru felt at his side was strange.  He looked over to see the woman nestled against him.  Her arm was laying over his stomach and he could feel her leg entangled in his.  It made slipping out unnoticed impossible.  Her face was angled toward him so he could see her long lashes and feel her breathe as it tickled his skin.  Sesshoumaru laid in the darkness and watched Kagome.  He had not realized how fascinating he found her.  She was an enigma he could not quite figure out.  A contradiction of everything he knew about humans.  He reached over and brushed a lock of hair away from her brow, causing her to stir.  Kagome’s eyes fluttered open to meet Sesshoumaru’s golden gaze.  He could see the confusion in them as she shifted against his body then the realization of where she was dawned on her features.  She fervently blushed as she pushed herself up and off of him.  “Did you sleep well?” he casually asked, avoiding the situation they had found themselves in.

Kagome sat on her knees, tucking hair behind her ears as she tried to process what had just happened.  Waking to find herself in his arms was a little more than alarming and she wasn’t sure how he could be so casual about it.  “Seriously?  That’s what you’re asking me?” she barked at him, frazzled that he could keep his cool during her meltdown.

He propped himself up on an elbow facing her.  Her yukata had loosened in her tossing and he gave it a passing glance.  “What would you have preferred I ask?” he inquired studying her.  He could see she was flushed from the way she had woken.  He had not intended to disturb her.  Though he was normally a light sleeper, he needed the respite to heal and had went into a deeper slumber.  It was not a state he normally entered outside these walls and Sesshoumaru had not expected Kagome to roll onto him.

Kagome tilted her head back and loudly sighed in irritation.  “How are you so calm?” she demanded, throwing her hands down on the mattress.  She wanted him to react but hadn’t expected Sesshoumaru to knock her over.  She was sure shock was written all over her face and, for the first time, she didn’t know what to say as he hovered over her.  His hands were over her shoulders and his legs were straddled at her hips, effectively trapping her.

His silver hair fell like a veil around the couple.  “You will hurt yourself,” he told her.  “If you reopen your wound, it will set you back another ten days,” Sesshoumaru explained.  Though it was an excuse to be near her, he did not want to admit that he desired the warmth or her.  He could not understand what she held that drew him.  “I am calm because nothing happened,” he spoke the truth then pushed himself off of her and the bed, disappearing from her sight.

Kagome heard the door open then close and assumed she was alone.  She finally let her body relax and moaned out loud.  She couldn’t believe he had done that and didn’t trust the excuse he told her.  Her last intention was to roll over to cuddle with him.  After sleeping with Shippou, it was natural for her to seek warmth.  Kagome hadn’t anticipated she would have subconsciously sought out the demon.  She looked down to see her robes were more revealing than she would have liked and knew Sesshoumaru had noticed it.  She groaned because of how ignorant she must have seemed in his eyes.  He had an advantage of hundreds of years of experience over her sixteen.  It hardly seemed fair.  She shook her head and sat up to see Sesshoumaru staring at her.  She quickly closed her yukata, realizing he had likely heard her.

He decided that it was probably best to ignore her sighing.  “I need to check your wound,” he told her and moved to sit beside the woman.  Sesshoumaru did not wait for her consent.  If she had torn any skin, it needed to be seen to as soon as possible.  He pulled the cloth aside just enough to examine the scar, cutting the bandages.  It had turned an ugly red.  He sat the jar in her lap and stood to gather more dressing before returning to her side.  “It needs to be treated.  You will have to remove the clothing.”  He kept his expression stoic as he stared at her.

Kagome couldn’t keep herself from uttering the first thing that came to mind.  “Excuse me?” she asked as she returned the blank look.  “I can do that myself,” she tried to assure him.  It was clear she had done it before without his assistance.  He was handling her like a child and she didn’t appreciate it.  She could understand that, by his standards, she seemed like one but to humans, she was a young adult.

He shook his head.  “I do not think so.  I am not leaving,” he told her.  She knew that he was serious.  Kagome set her jaw as she glared at him before looking away, pulling the fabric off her shoulders and revealing her lacy white bra.  She couldn’t bring herself to meet his eyes.  Sesshoumaru let his gaze linger before he began attending to the wound.  He worked quickly then drew away, signaling to her she could redress.

Kagome adjusted her yukata and, once in place, she noticed he had disappeared from her sight.  She carefully slide off of the bed and stepped around the corner to see Sesshoumaru sitting next to a tray of food.  She couldn’t avoid him forever and knew that, despite her embarrassment, it probably didn’t register to him.  Kagome doubted that her body could compare to the women that caught the demon’s eye.  Not that she wanted to.  She stepped out and down to sit next to the food.  “What did they bring for breakfast?” she asked, trying to get back to their awkward normal.

Sesshoumaru chose to play along with her, deciding that her change of mood was preferred.  “It is probably the usual,” he told her, watching Kagome lift the lid to the plate revealing grilled salmon with white rice and miso soup.  He was correct and removed his food off of the tray.  He began quietly eating, careful to avoid meeting her eyes.  Kagome followed his actions and their meal passed in silence.  When he finished, Sesshoumaru placed the empty platter on the tray and stood.  “I will return later.  Do not open the wound again,” he instructed before leaving.

Kagome watched him disappear as the door shut behind him and sighed in relief.  She looked down at her food.  He was being so gracious that the way she acted earlier made her feel horrible.  Her shoulders dropped.  How was she supposed to react when he acted so calmly?  It irritated her.  Kagome could understand why Inuyasha would get easily annoyed with Sesshoumaru.  His demeanor was always composed.

When he returned an hour later, he had her school clothing, handing them to her.  “They have been cleaned.  Inuyasha will be here soon and rooms have been prepared for you,” he told her, turning and walking toward the door.  Kagome immediately followed as he exited, spinning right and traveling down the hall a short ways.  He stopped and opened a door on the left, stepping back and allowing her entry.  She moved inside and saw a moderately sized room.  It wasn’t as big as Sesshoumaru’s but was near the same size.  “This is where you will stay,” he explained from the hallway.  “I will alert you when they arrive.”  He turned and walked away, leaving the woman alone.  He needed to distance himself from her before his brother arrived.  Any desires that were sown should be crushed before they bloomed.

Kagome closed the door and looked around the room.  It was as sparse as Sesshoumaru’s but as tasteful.  She wondered if the other rooms were similarly decorated.  She settled in and a few hours passed before a knock on the door brought the woman to her feet as it opened and Inuyasha burst through.  He darted toward her, putting his arms around the woman’s smaller frame, giving her a hard hug.

Kagome caught the steely look in Sesshoumaru’s eyes as Sango chastised him.  “Inuyasha, you heard what Sesshoumaru said.  Kagome was injured.  You don’t want to reopen her wound,” she scolded, glaring at him.  Shippou and Kirara bounced in behind her as she made her way toward her friend.

“Now Sango, he’s just happy she’s alive,” Miroku spoke up, entering last and trying to smooth over the situation.  He noticed that Sesshoumaru had kept himself stationed outside and faced the demon.  “Are you not coming inside?” the monk asked, drawing the attention of everyone else.

He avoided his brother’s scowl.  “I have other matters to attend to.  There are three rooms available.  Next door and across the hall,” he signaled, nodded then departed, not eager to see their reunion.  His skin crawled at the sight of him touching her.  Though their interactions had not bothered him before, Sesshoumaru could not say what had changed.

Inuyasha grunted at his absence.  “Finally,” he sighed, turning to face Kagome.  “Are you okay?  He didn’t hurt you, did he?” he asked, concern was written on his face.  He had worried about her.  He couldn’t be completely sure about his brother or what he would do.  Kagome was a priestess and not comparable to Rin who was a normal human child.  She was completely different, she was a threat.  Sesshoumaru could see her like that and he might take the chance to rid himself of that obstacle.

Kagome found that his attitude bothered her and she pulled away.  “No, I’m fine,” she replied with ire in her voice, “and he didn’t do anything to me, Inuyasha, other than, you know, save my life.”  Kagome threw her hands up.  “I can’t believe you,” she started, with more anger.  If he couldn’t see past all the bad blood they had then he couldn’t reconcile with his brother.

“Kagome,” Inuyasha began, trying to calm her before she pushed him away.  He didn’t want to start a fight and he didn’t want to hurt her.  He had been worried sick and was happy she was safe.  He didn’t care that Sesshoumaru had saved her life.  He took a step toward her but she moved back, confusing him more.  “Kagome.”

She put her hands up when he tried to comfort her.  “No,” she said.  Sango and Miroku exchanged a confused look with one another.  They weren’t sure what was going on with Kagome either.  She wasn’t usually so defensive of Sesshoumaru.  “I’m tired, Inuyasha, and I’m still healing, I just need to lay down.  Could you please go?” she asked, not looking at him.  Kagome couldn’t because she wanted to slap him.

His ears dropped as he nodded and walked out of the room.  Miroku followed him but Sango, Shippou, and Kirara stayed.  The woman waited for the door to shut before she spoke.  She wanted her friend to know she had her confidence.  “Are you really okay?” she asked as she slowly approaching Kagome.  “You seem like you’re favoring your left side.”  Sango glanced at the area she was indicating then looked her in the eyes.

Kagome’s shoulders slumped and she immediately felt terrible about her treatment of Inuyasha.  She knew she could have handled that differently but she had a short fuse after dealing with his level headed sibling.  “I’ll be back to a hundred percent soon.  I’m under strict orders,” she half laughed, shaking her head.  “I’m sorry.  It was a little rough but I made it.  Sesshoumaru was really great and it just rubbed me the wrong way when he said that,” she explained, rubbing her upper arms.  “I know he was worried and it was wrong of me to get upset.  I’ll apologize,” she told Sango before it could be suggested.

She laid a hand on her shoulder.  “Kagome, I understand,” she began and walked the woman to a group of large pillows.  “Inuyasha jumps to conclusions and you should talk to him, tell him about what happened.  He’ll listen to you but I know he understands too.”  It was the truth.  Even though Inuyasha grumbled when Kagome was telling him about something, he was attentive and retained the knowledge.  It was proof of her influence over him.  “Now,” she said, signaling to the seat in front of them, “tell me what happened.  We have plenty of time,” Sango smiled.

Kagome returned the grin and placed herself on one of the larger and more comfortable pillows, grabbing a smaller one and wrapping her arms around it for comfort.  She recounted the injuries and their encounter with the hare villagers.  Sango told her those types of demons were more docile than others, and mostly known for being notoriously friendly and helpful.  She omitted the intimate details because she didn’t want to concern her friend or put thoughts in her head that weren’t there.  Kagome had an imagination that could run wild and Sesshoumaru had shown no interest in her before.  The last thing she wanted to do was start a conflict that didn’t exist.  “And that’s how we ended up here,” she finished, extending her arms.  “Daegyn’s orders were for me to not travel while recovering and Sesshoumaru agreed.”  Kagome lowered her gaze, not looking at the woman across from her.  She didn’t want her to see the confusion she felt.

Sango sighed.  She knew Kagome believed she was helpless and was sure that Inuyasha would be upset with her for the delay in the shard hunt but Sango didn’t agree with that thought.  After the demon had thrown her, Inuyasha went crazy when he and Kirara were caught and thrown the opposite direction.  They hadn’t known her condition or realized Sesshoumaru had been absent until after they defeated the fiend.  Miroku had tried to reassure Inuyasha that his brother would ensure Kagome’s safe return but he wasn’t entirely convinced.  They had searched the area by air and land for hours to no avail.  When night fell, they were forced to camp and resumed the search the next morning.  It wasn’t until they received word from Sesshoumaru that they were able to have a measure a relief.  Inuyasha immediately started for his brother’s fortress, forcing the group to follow, but Sango didn’t feel that Kagome needed that knowledge.  It would only burden her with more unnecessary guilt.  She leaned over and hugged her friend.

The next several days passed by slowly and in routine.  Kagome and Sango would generally hangout in one another’s room while Inuyasha and Miroku would come under the guise of checking on her.  Kagome had went to talk to Inuyasha after she had cooled down and felt he understood his brother better.  It hadn’t been brought back up and she got the feeling that he was amazed at the efforts that Sesshoumaru had made but she worked to keep it out of her mind.  It was back to normal and that made her feel better.  She just wanted to get back to finding shards.  They enjoyed meals in laughter and conversation.  In the evenings, Kagome returned to her room and Sango would help her change her bandages before bed.  When she laid in bed at night, just before falling asleep, she briefly wondered if Sesshoumaru was avoiding her.

It was just after lunch and seven days had passed since Kagome had been injured when the hare knocked on her door.  “Daegyn, it’s so good to see you.  Please come in,” she spoke with a smile when she saw him and invited the demon in.  Sango and Inuyasha exchanged looks but kept silent.  “You didn’t have to make a trip just to see me,” she started as they moved into the main room.

His brows rose at her words.  It was surprising to hear that she had not been informed.  “Lord Sesshoumaru moved my village just north of here,” he told her.  It was Kagome’s turn to be astonished and  hurt that he hadn’t told her.  It wasn’t that he was obligated to inform her but now it seemed clear that he was avoiding her.  “I came to check your wound,” he told her, wanting to change the subject as he looked to the two individuals that sat to his right.  He noted them when he entered and had hoped to speak to her in private.

“Oh,” she said as she turned to face her friends.  “Uh, Daegyn, this is Inuyasha and Sango,” she explain, pointing to them.  “Guys, this is Daegyn, the healer that saved my life.  Do you mind giving us a few minutes?” she asked, while giving Sango a pleading look.  Kagome hoped that she would get the message.  She wanted to speak to Daegyn in private as well.

She nodded in understanding before the woman stood, pulling Inuyasha with her.  “Come on.  We can come back later,” she explained when he tried to speak.  It was clear from Kagome’s expression that something happened and Sango wanted to give her friend the space she asked her.  If she got the go ahead to travel, then it was good news.  When the door shut behind them, Inuyasha tried to lean against the wood but she dragged him away.  “If he tells her she’s good to go, then we can leave.  Let’s go check on Miroku and give her some space,” Sango suggested.  Inuyasha nodded and followed her but looked back as they entered Miroku’s room.

Kagome moved to sit on a pillow so Daegyn could examine the wound.  She had been changing the bandages every morning and evening, being scarce but thorough with the application of ointment.  She had tried twice to see if Sesshoumaru had needed more medicine but now realized that he may have obtained his own jar.  “When did you arrive?” she asked as he pulled the fabric back.

He could barely see the scar.  The salve had done its job and if she continued the use then there would be no visible mark.  “It was five days ago,” he replied as he put the clothing back.  Kagome was stunned to hear his answer.  He had shown on the same day as Inuyasha.  Sesshoumaru’s behavior, and absence, now made more sense.  He had been busy settling Daegyn and his village in.  She worried that he wasn’t caring for himself but knew that the hare wouldn’t let him slide.  “If you continue using the medicine for another week, you won’t have a scar,” he continued, ignorant to her thoughts.

“Thank you,” she said.  He was kind and considerate.  Kagome appreciated that and was happy to hear Sesshoumaru was helping them.  “How are you?” she asked, smiling at him.  She truly wanted to know.  It was unexpected to hear they had moved and, though she had no knowledge of any feuds in their immediate area, there had to be a reason for such a serious move.

“Lord Sesshoumaru works fast,” he began.  “We already have the village built, supplies setup, and fields planted.”  Kagome was amazed and it showed on her face.  “We are grateful he offered protection.”  He wanted to ask her about the man that had been in her room when he arrived.  He could tell he was a half demon and wondered if he was the rumored brother to Sesshoumaru.  The dog demon blood coursing through his veins was strong.

She nodded.  So that was how he managed to pay Daegyn.  The hare didn’t realize that he had become invaluable to the demon lord.  “How is Sesshoumaru doing?” she inquired, trying not to seem too desperate.  She knew he would gather information that Sesshoumaru probably preferred he not have, but she needed to know how his health was.  She wasn’t sleeping well.

“You haven’t seen him?” he asked, surprised at hearing this.  From the way Sesshoumaru had acted in refusing to leave her side, it was a shock to learn he was behaving completely opposite.  Daegyn wondered if this was because of the silver-haired man’s presence.  It was puzzling because it seemed clear there was an attraction between them.

“I think he’s avoiding me,” she explained, tucking hair behind one ear as she blushed.  She didn’t want to tell him that it was probably because of what happened when they slept in the same bed but from her behavior, Daegyn could guess there had been some unresolved sexual tension.

“He’s completely healed,” he told her, getting a smile in return.  It was news Kagome wanted to hear.  He pulled a jar out of his pocket and handed it to her.  “You are ready to start traveling again.  Be careful out there,” Daegyn told her.  “I don’t want to treat you again.”  He raised one of his brows at Kagome indicating that he was serious and she laughed, nodding and telling him okay.

She watched him leave and sighed to herself.  It was bittersweet.  She was healthy and could start collecting the shards but would be leaving and wasn’t sure if Sesshoumaru would join them.  Kagome knew everyone would be happy to hear the news and wondered how Sesshoumaru would feel, relief or melancholy?  She didn’t know if Daegyn would inform him after his visit and decided to talk the group into staying another night so they could leave early.  She knew Sango and Miroku would help her convince Inuyasha.

After dinner that night, Kagome returned to her room.  She had taken a bath and dressed for bed, deciding to sit at the open sliding door while she brushed her hair to enjoy the moonlight on the clear, cloudless night.  She hadn’t noticed Sesshoumaru appeared in the garden as he stood watching her.  Daegyn had reported his visit with Kagome and knew they would leave in the morning.  It would be several days before he could depart and part of him worried about Kagome’s safety.  He moved into her line of sight, finally catching her attention.

Kagome hid her elation at seeing him.  He looked well and, though she believed Daegyn, she wanted confirmation with her own eyes.  “I didn’t think you would come,” she said.  He looked puzzled at her words so she felt the need to elaborate.  “I thought you were avoiding me.”  He walked closer, forcing her to look up at him and meet he gaze.  “What have you been doing?” she asked even though she had a good idea, she wanted to hear it from him.  She wanted him to talk to her.  This would probably be the last time they would be alone like this.  Kagome found that she wanted to cherish the moment and didn’t break eye contact.

He wanted to touch her, hold her and feel her warmth but his brother was across the hall and he did not want to an altercation or to force Kagome into an unwanted situation.  “I had other matters to take care of.”  He stood over her, drinking in the woman that was seated staring up at him.  He saw an amalgamate of contradictions.  There was a purity that she held with an underlying hunger hidden in her eyes.  She was an innocent stained with the blood of corrupted demons.  Sesshoumaru had seen her commit acts of bravery and tremendous courage while remaining humble.  She showed humans and demons kindness, mercy, and compassion when they needed it.  Something he had never witnessed from another human, and he saw her bring it out in the ones around her.  Kagome made them better beings.  She had a temper but could also be patient and forgiving. Sesshoumaru had seen it numerous times with Inuyasha.  And he had experienced her more than persistent nature.  She had extensive knowledge from a surprising variety of subjects yet was naive to their customs and crossed a line more than once.  But she was righteous, honorable, and had an integrity that he did not see in most humans.  Still, he had witnessed a flash of jealousy that was deep in her heart over his brother’s relationship with the dead priestess.  Her imperfections only made her more alluring.  “It will be some time before I will be able to catch up to you.  Stay close to the demon slayer,” he ordered her.  He did not want to chance another serious injury while he was away.

“Really?” she laughingly asked.  “Why Sango?” she pushed, wondering about the reasoning behind his choice.  She could take care of herself and thought he may have forgotten that little fact.

“She has the cat demon.  It is the best escape route if trouble should arise,” he explained, clearly annoyed with her question.  He did not see the humor in her situation and pulled out a jar of medicine, handing it to her.  “Take this.”

Kagome took the jar, their fingers touching, as she looked up at him.  “Daegyn already gave me one,” she told him, trying to give it back.  She knew he might need the salve too.  He had Rin and others to look after.

He shook his head.  “I know your generosity.  You will share the medicine.  Take it,” he said.  He had easy access to more with the healer living near his home, and he had tasked a handful of men to search and collect the rare plant when they arrived.  The group had returned with enough for a dozen bottles and Daegyn had eight ready.

She lowered her hand, gripping the bottle in her lap.  “Thank you,” she replied.  “And I promise to stay close to Sango.”  She didn’t want him to worry over her so she would agree to his demand.  He nodded but didn’t walk away.  It was clear he was hesitate and she had wanted to tell him so many things.  “Did you heal well?” she asked, giving him reason to pause.  She hadn’t gotten much information from Daegyn but was holding herself back from checking the wound with her own eyes.  It was hard for her to believe that the nasty looking bruise was completely gone after such a short time.

“I am healthy again,” he assured her.  “Daegyn told me that you are will enough to travel again so I have had some supplies prepared for the journey.  They will be ready for your departure in the morning.”  Even though he was sure his brother would protest, it was necessary to have proper supplies.  Food and first aid was never a bad idea.

“Thanks,” she replied as she continued to stare at him.  It was less unnerving but there was also something different between them now, an understanding that wasn’t there before.  She could see that Sesshoumaru was more than that first impression and more than Inuyasha thought, and Kagome was embarrassed to have dumbed him down to something so trivial and simple as that.  “I think it was a great thing you did for Daegyn and the villagers.  He seems much happier than he did before,” she commented, noticing how his demeanor had seemed more jovial.  She doubted Sesshoumaru would have seen the change but didn’t discount it.  “I know that you probably don’t really care about my opinion but I don’t believe you despise humans as much as you let on.”  She held his eyes, challenging him to deny her words.  She could recount a number of times to help jog his memory.

Sesshoumaru nodded at her.  It was not something he would refute.  He did not detest humans so much as find them more of a grievance he had to endure.  “It is clear that my brother believes that but I have not given him any reason to presume so,” he replied.  It was true that he had held a resentment toward Inuyasha but that had nothing to do with the human blood running through his veins.  He moved back when he heard a noise in the hall.  “I will see you in a week,” he told her.  He had stayed too long and needed to return before they were discovered by someone.  Kagome tried to hide the disappointment at his early departure but Sesshoumaru caught it on her face before he slipped into the shadows.

He heard the knock on her door before Kagome called for them to enter.  Inuyasha appeared, closing the entrance as he approached her, sitting down.  She smiled at him as she continued to brush her hair.  “Are you ready to get back to finding the shards?” he asked, watching the woman next to him.

“I am.  I feel a little rusty though,” she told him, with concern in her voice.  “I lost my bow so I haven’t been able to practice.”  She didn’t look at Inuyasha because she didn’t want to see his disappointment.  It was another thing that would set them back.

“Don’t worry about it.  We’ll find you another one,” he told her, trying to ease her worry.  Inuyasha wanted to be off his father’s lands and away from his brother, even if it was for a short time.  He thought about how Sesshoumaru had cared for Kagome and wondered what had compelled him.  “I’ll ask Sesshoumaru.  He might have one he could give us,” Inuyasha suggested.

He got the result he wanted when the shock caused her to make eye contact.  “Really?” she asked in excitement.  “Inuyasha, you’re really going to talk to Sesshoumaru?”  He nodded when he saw the joy on her face.  It confused him but he wasn’t sure why or what had brought the pleasure about.  “That’s great.  You can start patching up your relationship.”

He nodded again, realizing that Kagome’s intentions was not in line with his assumptions.  Inuyasha stood.  “I’ll see you in the morning,” he said as he turned and walked out, leaving Kagome alone.

She sighed and sat, staring out into the garden several minutes before she moved inside, closing the door.  Inuyasha had been difficult to deal with since they had been here but she thought that part of it was probably because of his guilt over her injury and the fact that he felt Sesshoumaru had taken his job, so to speak.  Kagome knew that this would be a long week and tried to not focus on the things that were out of her control.

Daegyn stood with the small band of demons to see the group off.  As he studied the scene before him, it seemed that some of the residents within the castle walls knew them well and it was evident from their conversations.  After hearing various rumors, the imp confirmed the one truth he needed.  From Jaken’s ranting, Daegyn had gathered that Kagome was Inuyasha’s woman.  Sesshoumaru taking an interest in her was beyond the toad’s comprehension yet he had seen the lord yearn for the woman.  If they traveled as a group, then he could foresee problems that would arise and wanted no barriers for his lord to find contentment in any form he could.  He had worked on a concoction which he wanted to be available should the need arise.  When it was his turn, he approached Kagome and gave her some advice on surrounding plants and forest foods that would help her.  He waved them off and pivoted to see Sesshoumaru disappearing down the hallway.  He knew the demon was busy but couldn’t understand what was keeping him from leaving with her.  He knocked on the lord’s door and was let in.  Daegyn moved into the room and faced Sesshoumaru, wanting to be direct.  “Lord Sesshoumaru, I hope my inquiry is not too forward but I wanted to know what else needed to be finished with the village preparations.”

His brow lifted.  The healer knew that Kagome had just left and wondered what he really wanted to know.  “The last task is finishing houses which should be done in two days,” he explained.  “What is it that you wish to learn?” he asked point-blank.  He knew how people talked and rumors were bound to fly.  It was not uncommon for new tenants to come inquiring about some rumor they had heard.

“Why did you decide to stay behind?” he inquired, throwing up his hands.  “I know there are other duties you have to attend to but if the village is so close to being finished, what’s keeping you here?”  He genuinely wanted to understand the lord’s reasoning.  His counsel took care of most of the matters of state and only relinquished control to Sesshoumaru when it was an important or sensitive issue.

“There is another matter that needs to be wrapped up.  Once that is done, I will rejoin the group.  You need not worry that you are keeping me here,” he replied.  He did not want to reveal that the issue was his proximity to Kagome.  He needed to distance himself and be able to refocus without the distraction so he began to put measures in place to help him.

Daegyn nodded.  “Forgive me for asking, Lord Sesshoumaru.”  He bowed and moved to the door.  It was a split second decision but he turned and spoke, getting the demon’s attention.  “When you have a chance, stop by.”  He exited and left him alone.  Daegyn would work on his approach.

The week passed quickly for Sesshoumaru.  The night before, he laid in bed contemplating his conversation with Daegyn that morning.  He glanced to his right, remembering Kagome laying next to him that evening.  It was not something that felt within the realm of possibility and he pushed it out of his mind, closing his eyes.  When morning came, he gathered the supplies and left.  By midafternoon, he found the group and rejoined them.  Kagome was welcoming and friendly as were the other humans.  His brother was less gruff than his usual self.  He easily stepped back into the fold.  It seemed like the time with Kagome had never happened and he was not sure how he felt about that.  They camped before nightfall and Sesshoumaru kept his customary distance.  It was after midnight and the humans were asleep when his brother approached.  He signaled to follow so the demon stood and accompanied Inuyasha.

When they were a few yards away, he turned and faced Sesshoumaru.  “I wanted to say thanks for the help with everything,” he spoke bluntly.  “I haven’t been fair and I’m sorry about that.”  Inuyasha scratched behind his ear, signaling how uncomfortable he was.  It wasn’t something he was accustomed to and he wasn’t sure how his brother would react.  It was an uncomfortable situation for them both.

Sesshoumaru was a little taken back by the words he had heard.  He knew that Kagome had done this.  It was her influence which caused the change in his brother.  “Do not worry about it,” he told him.  He did not want it to become more awkward than it already was but he would not waste the opportunity she had created.  “We have the same goal.  It would be in our best interests to work together.”

He nodded in agreement.  “Yeah, they said the same thing,” he replied.  Sesshoumaru assumed he meant the others.  “The faster we kill Naraku, the better I’ll sleep,” Inuyasha confessed.  It was something that seemed like an inevitable end.  Naraku always had an escape plan or outsmarted them in some way.

He knew that it was the truth.  He had seen the toll of that weight on his shoulders though he was not sure how to inspire him.  “It is closer with every step.”  He pulled a jar from his sleeve and offered it to Inuyasha.  “It is a strong medicine that helps to quickly heal wounds.  Take this one.”

Sesshoumaru dropped it into his hand and he examined it before looking up at him.  “Kagome has one of these.”  He was not surprised Inuyasha put the two pieces together and nodded.  “Did Daegyn give it to you as well?” he asked.

“No,” Sesshoumaru shook his head.  There was no sense in hiding the truth.  “They desired protection and was moved close to the stronghold.  I pay the healer for the medicine,” he stated before Inuyasha could make a comment.  He did not want to explain arrangements with his tenants.

He cleared his throat, deciding to avoid the subject.  “We’re looking at following the river farther north.  Did you get any new leads?” he asked, trying to not choke on the words.  He knew Kagome was right.  He needed to stop looking at his brother as an enemy and instead as an ally.  It would make things easier for everyone and fast track them past Naraku’s obstacles.

Sesshoumaru shook his head.  Naraku had kept quiet and there had not been any word on shards or activities of his detachments.  “It is a good idea.  He has been gradually retreating north for the past few months.”  Though it was information he had shared previously, Sesshoumaru thought he might need a reminder.

Inuyasha nodded.  “Then that’s what we’ll do,” he told him.  “We should return,” he suggested and Sesshoumaru agreed, following his younger sibling back to camp.  They resumed their positions and the demon continued to watch over the group.

The next two weeks passed in similar fashion.  He was careful to keep his distance from Kagome.  They followed the river, diverting twice when she sensed a shard nearby.  He kept her within a few yards during both encounters.  The battles had been fruitful and everyone came away unscathed.  Sesshoumaru considered it a win.  Once they left the rolling plains and entered the rocky, mountainous land, the terrain change left them vulnerable.  Inuyasha noticed it as well and voiced his opinion that they move up to camp.  Sesshoumaru agreed and, though Kagome hid her surprise at their consensus, she was the first to vote yes.  The brothers scouted ahead and returned within the hour.  They had found a cave that would be adequate for the size of the group and lead them up before beginning their evening routines.  It had become customary for him to join Inuyasha, taking the monk’s place.  They spoke little but their time together seemed to make Kagome happy and was the only reason he continued the menial teamwork.  Sesshoumaru imagined it was the same for Inuyasha.  They walked back into the cave to see her stirring the soup over the fire.  Shippou was sleeping on the mat that had been laid out with Kirara curled next to him.

She looked up and smiled at the brothers.  “It’s almost done,” she said, tapping the spoon against the metal.  Kagome stood and brushed the dirt off of her knees.

Inuyasha sniffed around.  “Where’s Miroku and Sango?” he asked, not catching their scent nearby.  It was dangerous to go out too far.  He had told them before he left that Naraku had eyes everywhere and took opportunities when they rose.

“We needed more water.  That’s why Miroku and Sango went,” she explained.  It was the lesser of two evils.  She was less likely to be found than they were.  They had agreed that the brothers had found a safe place for them to stay the night.  “What did you find?” she asked, directly the question to Sesshoumaru.

“Rabbit and fish,” he replied, giving her the same short answer but he held her eyes.  She had tried to approach him but he kept his distance, hoping that she would resign herself to leaving him alone.  It had not seemed to work as well as he hoped.

Inuyasha held up the catch to show her their haul.  It was enough to feed them all - six fish and four rabbits would fill their stomachs for the night.  They had rougher terrain to cover than the usual rolling hills.  Inuyasha was not as familiar with the territory as his brother and relinquished his control, relying on him to guide them.  It was not an easy task for him and he knew Kagome recognized that, encouraging him to have faith.  Her optimism always surprised him.  “Sesshoumaru knows some good places to hunt,” he spoke, gaining her attention.

She smiled at him.  “If you start preparing those, I’ll ready the fire,” she suggested to the two as she moved back to the soup.  Sesshoumaru watched her pull the hot iron from the flames before he followed Inuyasha outside.  They skinned the rabbit then used branches, which had been laid out for them, as skewers.  The fish received a similar treatment.  Inuyasha chopped the heads off, leaving the tails.  They brought the food back into the cavern to find Kagome had finished setting up to cook the meat.  “You can bring it over,” she waved at them.  Inuyasha didn’t hesitate and went to lay the fish on the low metal rack.  Sesshomaru followed his lead and set the rabbit on the y-shaped posts positioned on opposite sides of the fire pit.  As he stepped away, Sango and Miroku entered with two pails of water.

“You’re back.  How was the hunt?” Miroku asked as Inuyasha turned to face him.  Sesshoumaru kept his back to the cavern wall, intentionally avoiding Kagome’s glances as he watched the two interact.  Inuyasha had become more comfortable with humans since he had been freed from the slumber spell the dead priestess laid upon him.  It was a trait he needed to learn.  His lands sheltered humans and it was becoming increasingly hard for him to approach them without seeing fear first.  Although it was a desired effect during battle, it was not something he wanted to see in the people he welcomed into his home.

“It was pretty quick.  Sesshoumaru knows some good spots,” Inuyasha replied as he nodded toward his brother.  He dipped his head when everyone’s eyes focused on him.  He was aware that Kagome’s lingered before she shifted to rotate the fish.  He ignored her as Inuyasha continued.  “Sesshoumaru suggested we stay close to the river.  We’ll have access to shelter, fresh water, and food as we pass through.  We estimate that it will be another two or three days before we reach the forest.”  He looked to everyone for their response.  Miroku and Sango voiced their concerns and opinions before ultimately agreeing to the plan.  It was the least risky route with the sure option of using the river as a quick escape if Naraku decided to attack while they were traveling through the mountains.

Kagome kept her silence as she rotated the meat.  The ominous feeling that fell over her when they crossed into the mountains hadn’t subsided.  She couldn’t shake the sense that Naraku was closer than they realized.  Sesshoumaru’s words echoed in her mind.  The possibility that he made the decision to kill her seemed like the obvious conclusion.  She hadn’t brought herself to speak with Inuyasha about her assumption, and didn’t know if Sesshoumaru brought the subject up either.  It was clear from his behavior that he didn’t want to linger on their short time together.  She was confused by his behavior.  His distance didn’t surprise her but she couldn’t deny that it hurt.  She thought they connected, if even for a brief moment.  His unwillingness to recognize her presence was affecting her more than she wanted to admit.  And evidently it was bad if Inuyasha could sense it.  Kagome needed to squash the tide of affection that was beginning to grow.

Inuyasha’s voice brought her back to the present.  “Then it’s settled.  We’ll get through the mountains as fast as possible.”  He turned to look at Kagome before moving to sit near her and the fire.  He had noticed that she was unusually silent during the conversation.  It was clear to him that something was bothering her.  When they had eaten and it was time to clean, he volunteered to help, following Kagome with the dirty dishes.  He thought that she might open up if they were away from the others.  He had to keep a closer eye on her.  The last thing he needed was his brother interfering in his relationship.

Sesshoumaru gave them a brief glance before returning his attention to the conversation between Miroku and Sango.  Their debate on the use of healing herbs held little interest for him other than serving as a distraction.  He did not want to think about what consolation his brother would be giving Kagome.  Although he had resigned himself to keeping his distance from her, it was hard to see her with anyone else.  It was a feeling that Sesshoumaru had never thought he would experience, and one he did not like.  When the two returned, Inuyasha was carrying the clean dishes and they were lightly chatting.  It looked like Kagome was in a better mood.  When their eyes met, Sesshoumaru didn’t look away and she smiled at him before her attention was pulled by Sango.  The rest of the night passed in conversation as the group discussed the planned path.  Kagome was more vocal and voiced the concerns she had over using the open terrain.  Although it was just as disadvantageous for Naraku, he would still have the opportunity of surprise if he used the cover the mountains and trees provided.  Inuyasha agreed but pointed out that Sesshoumaru suggested using a formation as they moved, layering the party.  The brothers would be on the outer edge with Miroku and Sango to the left then Kagome closest to the shoreline.  In theory, it would work but put in practice was another situation and Kagome was hesitate to go forward with the experiment.

The conversation turned to lighter topics.  Miroku and Inuyasha discussed strategies for their next hunt.  Both attempted to pull the demon into the discussion but he kept his answers short and left little room for more queries.  Sango asked Kagome about her studies, which grabbed Sesshoumaru’s attention.  He had a passing interest in how she obtained such a vast realm of knowledge.  She was kind, beautiful, intelligent, and when paired with how sharp and well-skilled the woman was, it became an impressive combination for a human to possess.  To say that Kagome was unique would be an understatement.  Sesshoumaru saw her as a rare blooming flower.

She sighed as she set the cup of water next to her.  “Not well,” she replied as she rolled her eyes and shook her head.  “I’m behind and desperately need to catch up.  I’m never going to graduate at this rate.”  Shippou moved to sit in her lap, attempting to comfort the mother-figure in his life.  Sesshoumaru tried to ignore the young demon as Kagome petted his ears, refusing to recognize his annoyance with the child or the reason behind such emotions.  He understood her words but not what she was saying and had to refrain from asking her point-blank about the meaning behind her statement.  It was something he would confront her about when they were out of everyone’s earshot.  “My grandfather comes up with these ridiculous diseases as excuses.  It’s embarrassing,” she groaned, hanging her head.  “All my friends think I’m weird and the rest of the school thinks I’m some diseased freak.”  Kagome had tried to not focus on situations that were out of her control but every time she returned home, it was more uncomfortable for her than the previous visit.  The past was beginning to feel more like home.

Sango let out a light laugh as she laid a hand on her friend’s shoulder in comfort.  “You’re not a diseased freak,” she repeated the phrase.  “I’m sure everything will work out, Kagome.  Have faith in yourself.”  The woman nodded at her encouragement.  It just meant that she would have to work a little hard when she returned home.

Inuyasha’s laugh drew the women’s attention.  Whatever Miroku had said made him bellow like a jackal.  It brought a smile to Kagome’s lips.  She had only seen him like this a few times.  After all the stress they had dealt with, a relaxing night and laughter was exactly what they needed to relieve the tension that had built up over the past few weeks.  She knew she needed it and, even though she was keeping her suspicions to herself, Kagome wanted him to decompress when the moment rose.  Inuyasha stood and announced he was going to the bathroom before moving out of the shelter, disappearing into the night.  She watched him before shifting closer to the fire.  Sango and Miroku were in conversation over their turns for watch.  Kagome hid her smile.  Since Sesshoumaru had joined the group, there had been little need for them to rotate watch as much but there was still arguments on whose turn it would be.  She glanced toward the lord and their eyes met.  His gaze was intense and telling, and held hers until Sango called out to the woman.  “What do you think, Kagome?”

“I’m sorry, what?” she asked, confused and trying to hide where her attention had been.  She didn’t want to alert the others and was relieved when they hadn’t noticed her staring at the demon across the fire.

Sango had a brief look of concern before Miroku drew her attention.  “I’m sure Inuyasha won’t be much longer,” he spoke, trying to comfort her.  “How’s the food coming?”  It was an attempt to distract the woman and everyone knew it.  Miroku watched Kagome turn the food, checking to answer his question.

Sesshoumaru knew the monk was lying to spare the female’s feelings.  It was not something he approved of.  Kagome had a right to know the truth.  He had smelled the dead priestess during their hunt, and was sure his brother had as well though neither spoke on it.  He doubted Inuyasha would return any time soon.  Although he knew little of his brother’s relationship with the dead woman, he had gathered enough knowledge to understand how deep the connection was and how it hurt the living woman across from him.

Kagome glanced at him as he studied her.  He caught a glimpse of the pain she hid before it was masked by a smile.  “Here,” she spoke, handing him one of the skewers.  “It should be finished by now and is delicious when it’s hot.”  She nodded as he took the food, turning to hand the others their portions.  She kept a watch on the entrance, waiting to see the red of Inuyasha’s cloak.  Sesshoumaru kept silent.  Not wanting to draw attention to her pain but sure her friends could see and sense it as he did.

The conversation was light as the moon rose in the sky and, after a couple of hours, they began to ready themselves for bed.  The women made a trip to alleviate themselves while Miroku sat with Shippou and Sesshoumaru, restocking their wood supply.  He added some logs on the fire, shifting the timber so that it would burn throughout the night and cleared his throat.  “He won’t be coming back tonight.”  The monk’s words were soft and full of regret and sorrow.

“I know,” Sesshoumaru replied, ignoring the kit as he looked between the two.  His statement was brief and he saw no need to inform him of her presence in the forest.  It seemed the man was as well-informed as he was.  It was no surprise.  “I will take watch tonight,” he told him.  If his brother appeared while the humans were sleeping, he would have words for him.  It was irresponsible to leave Kagome alone when Naraku was clearly targeting her.

When the women returned, Kagome looked to be in a better mood.  It was of some relief to the demon that she could rely on her friend.  They settled in and soon, were asleep as light snoring filled the cavern.  Kagome was to his left, farthest from the entrance as a safety precaution.  Sango laid across from him while Miroku took the position to shield her in case of a surprise.  The sounds of the night echoed in the distance and there was no sign of his brother even as the moon began to set.  A groan at his side drew Sesshoumaru’s attention and he turned to see Kagome waking.  She shifted, rolling onto her back and covering her eyes with her arm before sitting up.  Shippou stirred next to her but didn’t move.

The logs still held an amber glow allowing her to see the others were still asleep and that Inuyasha was still absent.  Kagome sighed then turned to see Sesshoumaru staring at her and blushed, realizing he must have been watching her the whole time.  “Good morning,” she whispered, slipping out from under the blanket.  Kagome paused to recover Shippou before she pulled her shoes on.

“It is not morning yet,” he replied, briefly wondering about the silly human greeting as he watched her.  “What are you doing?” he finally asked when she stood, tiptoeing around the bodies.  He knew she was aware she was not allowed to leave without an escort.

She blushed again.  Surely he was aware that humans needed to use the bathroom in the mornings.  It would be embarrassing to point it out but she would have to.  “I have to go,” she explained, pointing to the forest while trying to not make eye contact.  Sesshoumaru nodded and stood, moving toward the exit.  Kagome stared after him.  “What are you doing?” she whispered loudly when she caught up to him, trying to keep her voice low as they left the shelter.

Sesshoumaru cast a long glance at her as he continued forward, forcing Kagome to follow.  “You need privacy, correct?” he questioned, steering them toward the river.  It would be more secure than moving into the forest and still give her the privacy she desired.  He weighed the option of bringing up his brother but decided against it.

Kagome noted the terrain.  It was the same way she and Sango had come the night before.  “Yes,” she replied, nodding.  She watched him, wondering why he had offered to escort her, though he didn’t actually say anything.  Kagome let out a sigh as her eyes wandered to the fading night sky.  The light from the stars was waning as dawn was breaking and there was still no sign of Inuyasha.  She wondered if he was all right.  Sesshoumaru stopped and she realized he had brought her to the same place she and Sango visited the previous night.  “Thank you,” she mumbled as she went to behind a bush, several feet away.  Kagome tried to not think about him listening to her urinate then thought it was silly of her to be concerned about normal bodily functions.  Even demons had to use the bathroom.  When she finished, she cleaned herself then washed by the river before rejoining Sesshoumaru.  “I feel so much better,” she exclaimed with a sigh of relief.  He nodded as they began their way back.  Kagome watched him for a minute before she decided to ask him.  “Did Inuyasha come back?”

The hope and hesitation in her voice was apparent and it tugged at his heart but he decided to answer her truthfully.  “No, and I do not believe it will be any time soon.”  If his suspicions were correct, his brother was still with the dead woman enjoying himself.  He saw the disappointment in her eyes.  “It is foolish to hold out for him.”

Kagome couldn’t be upset with Sesshoumaru for being honest with her.  Afterall, she was the one that brought up the subject.  “I know,” she replied with a sigh, locking her fingers behind her.  “You’re probably right.  It’s stupid to wait around but I could never compete with what they had, and I don’t want to, you know.”  He shook his head.  Sesshoumaru could not understand why he chose that shell over the one in front of him.  “It’s hard to explain, and complicated.  I don’t want Inuyasha to forget about Kikyou,” she began, “and I don’t think it’s healthy to push him into getting past her either.  In the end, all I can really do is wait.”

“Maybe you should try someone who is not currently attached,” he suggested, waiting for her reaction.  He had slowed their pace but she had yet to notice.  They were still downwind from their camp and, if Inuyasha were to return, he would not immediately know the direction they traveled.  He had bought them a little time.

Kagome laughed at those words.  “Do you have anyone in mind?” she jested, trying to not enjoy what he said too much.  She didn’t want to hurt his feelings and wiped a tear away before focusing on the demon next to her.  She could see the serious expression on his face and dropped her hand.  “Oh, I’m so-”

Since he started traveling with the group, his interest began growing in the woman and he could not get her out of his mind.  He had held himself back until his brother had made it apparent there was little interest.  Inuyasha’s actions spoke louder than his words.  She was fragile and needed his protection.  Sesshoumaru leaned in and captured her lips, slipping his tongue into her mouth as one hand landed on the small of her back, to pull her close, while the other cupped her face.  It was clear he had surprised her.  Her shock faded and Kagome responded, lacing her fingers through his hair and drawing him closer.  He was intoxicating and she was lost to herself and where she was.  A moan escaped as he broke the contact and she tried to pull him back.  When she opened her eyes, he could see the lust beginning to roll in.

Sesshoumaru picked her up and moved her to a more private, sheltered area.  He leaned her against a tree and captured her lips again so any pleasure would be drowned out.  Kagome welcomed him so he slipped hands under her clothing.  One found a breast while the other slide into her panties.  He would remember to be gentle as he eased a finger into her.  Kagome gasped and jerked but relaxed as he worked her.  She arched her body, and hips fell into rhythm with him as their tongues danced.  She worked her hands under his clothing to feel him, fingers running over tones muscles.  Her body was tingling while on fire, like her pleasure couldn’t reach any greater heights yet surpassed her expectations.  The intensity grew before she exploded, her scream of gratification was damped by his mouth.  Sesshoumaru pulled away, their breathe mixing.  “Me,” he whispered as the colors of dawn filled the sky.
